I have sensitive hair and skin. Dry and oily with eczema and rosacea; all exasperated by hysterectomy induced menopause. Unless a product is just aweful right away, I never review it until I've used it at least a week.. because that is usually how long it takes for a great product to cause build up or sensitivity for me. But I also try to be fair in a review because I understand that what doesn't work for me, may be great for someone else. However. I will still be honest about my experience. Because if someone else is struggling with the same issues I have, then my review may really help.
I am picky on hair products. What works for others, often makes a mess of my tresses. But this works for my dry, quick to get smelly & itchy scalp issues. This product is more of a co-wash than a shampoo. It's thick. Conditioning. Don't expect suds. It does stink. The smell is like a muscle rub. And I know this is in attempt to hide the sulfur smell. The smell does ease up as your hair dries. But, if it bothers young use it once a week on a day that you're home. It's great for weekend usage.
I AM IMPRESSED! First. Understand that my hair is fine, wavy and fragile and hates EVERYTHING. Silicone, oils, butters.. hate, hate, hate. Trying to be more natural is difficult at best. I have tried SO MANY products. They either make my hair dry or greasy. I probably have aweful water too.. so the challenge of finding a product that works is increased.
This doesn't have all that stuff that my hair hates. So far I've had no negative reaction to the wheat protein either (I'll update in a few weeks). Just soft and silky. 💓
I have ultra fine, med. density 2b waves prone to getting oily, dryness, & build up PROS. This co-wash smells nice. And didn't make my head itch. I didn't get oily, or dry. And (did I mention?) it smells nice.
CONS. It's very thick without much slip. Which means I have to use a lot to get it spread. It's costly. So using more product is an issue. Then it doesn't rinse clean. I TRIED extra long rinsing. But product was still noticeably in my hair and my hair took FOREVER to dry. But. Despite the product not rinsing clean, I don't look oily or dusty/dull/dirty. I would not recommend based on cost and difficulty to spread and rinse.
This actually works for me!Nothing works for my ultra fine, med. density 2b waves that start low porosity but are so prone to frizz, flatness, build up and dryness that leads to damaged ends. I have oily & dry itchy scalp to boot.. just because life always has to offer one more kick. But this stuff works for me! I don't use it on the lengths of my hair to often, but have found that it makes a great daily scalp treatment. I just spead a TINY bit on my finger tips, while still dripping wet in the shower, and I gently run it onto my scalp and new growth area. Using this has helped my scalp itching, flakes and my head doesnt get oily and smelly nearly as fast (I can make it ALL day and have a day 2 cowash instead of HAVING to shampoo daily) After my day 2 cowash, I am careful to use even less product, to avoid greasiness & weigh down. It smells pretty good too. I am still super careful with it because natural oils and butters tend to weigh down and build up fast on my hair.
Truly seems weighless. Nice smell (not to much like most SM products) Does leave me some fly aways and I do have to clarify regulary (about every 5 days). I believe that the oils are creating a product build up frizzy halo. Not spectacular slip, but decent. I did by again and will use. But not soley or daily. I had more shed than usual. Does NOT seem to aggravate my eczema. I have ultra fine, med. density 2b waves
It's ok. Limited ingredients. Not to harsh. But everytime I use it, I get itchy scalp after. And not dry itchy scalp. Oily scalp. When I gently try to scratch my scalp, I should not get "stuff" (head oils/eczema) under my nails. Ew. I also get redness and bumps. I've used this on and off for years. I've tried co-washing or using another shampoo after (as if this was a "pre-poo") I'm not sure exactly what is in this that my skin doesn't like. Smells Amazing! First. This smells EXACTLY like a product my hairdresser uses, and it is delicious! I am certain that this is a great product for some people. My problem is that I have ultra fine/2b wavy hair that gets dry and brittle easy but also gets greasy, flat and build up easy and it hates silicones & PEG's (which are in 95% of every hair product) & keratin proteins and alcohols (that's what we know for sure.. ) And this has PEG as the #2 ingredient. My hair had frizz and dried patches almost immediately after putting a very small amount into my dripping wet hair. Though dry/frizz is ALWAYS a bad sign for me, I went ahead and let my hair dry instead of washing the product out (I wanted to really see how it would work, because I really wanted this to be a good product for me). But. 2 hrs later I was 100% sure that this was going to lead to dry/brittle nastiness and I decided to cowash it out and be late for work.
I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 because it did help my fine/2b/med-thick hair really curl up to a solid 2c.. But. It also took forever for my hair to dry. But I loved the curl, and wanted so bad for this to be the holy grail everyone else makes it out to be. So I kept trying.. different ways.. very little on dripping wet hair, watered down and spritzed in.. And with each use the time it took for my hair to dry got longer. Plus my hair felt gummier and my ends got crunchier. After the 5th use I had to wash it straight out as soon as I put it in. I then had to use a clarifier and a deep conditioner. It STILL didn't bring my hair back 100%. My ends were ruined. I had to get 3" cut off. What a waste of $ for me.
I switched to this because my skin prefers olive oil over coconut. I have sensitive skin prone to acne, dryness, eczema and rosacea. And this moisturizes deep and makes my skin glow. The smell is perfumed and isn't for everyone, but I got used to it fast. And it doesn't irritate at all. If you are curious about the smell, Nubian Heritage is a sister company to a company that sells in the natural section of the box stores and their olive oil products smell the same..
