Sponges are good for hermit crabs because even though they need heat and not water, the sponge keeps the tank humid, which is great for hermit crabs! They also love to climb and play with the sponge if they are thirsty or over heated!

Crabs do not need this and in fact makes it harder for them. crabs need to go into water to fill their shell with water and keep their bodies moist. sponges don't allow that to happen.
