Long before fairy-core aesthetics took over social media, holographic and duochrome makeup was already having a moment. One of the most memorable examples came from Too Faced with their Melted Latex Liquified High Shine Liquid Lipstick, particularly their metallic shade Unicorn Tears. Marketed as a high-shine liquid lipstick with a lacquer-like finish, the formula promised saturated color with an almost “latex” gloss effect. The honey-like texture was designed to cling to the lips, delivering juicy shine and bold pigment through a comfortable doe foot applicator. And visually, Unicorn Tears really delivered. The shade is a metallic duo-chrome blue that shifts toward lavender and pink in the light layered with shimmer and an almost holographic shine. It’s the kind of color that feels magical—equal parts lipstick and special effects. Worn alone it’s dramatic; layered over another lipstick it becomes a transformative topper. But the formula comes with a trade-off. While glossy and vibrant, the texture was famously thick and tacky—more patent leather than lightweight gloss. Wear time hovered around an hour or two before reapplication, and the stickiness could make you hyper aware of your lips throughout the day. That awareness became the most memorable part of my experience. I’m something of a perfectionist with makeup—a standard I never truly achieve , but my brain and artist’s eye keep chasing it any way. With Unicorn Tears, I found myself worrying about my lipstick constantly—being able to feel all that thick product on my lips was a constant reminder—and I found myself checking mirrors quite often to make sure that the lacquered shine was still sitting perfectly. And each time I checked, I’d be struck anew by how pretty the color was and how beautiful it was when the light hit it a certain way. The shimmering blue-lavender shift with glitter and gloss really was mesmerizing. So I’d smile. Only later after it was pointed out to me that I looked strange and a little possessed smiling at myself in the mirror all day did I realize that I did present a pretty strange sight to everyone else. Beautiful lipstick. But so much work. It was just—awkward. I felt like a model on a shoot wearing it and yearned for direction.
