Do you feel like the idea behind the Elf on the Shelf is a contradictory book/toy? The elf is supposed to watch over the kids and make sure they're being good, yet most of the elves are doing naughty things...

We used this at the YMCA one year for the ASC program and we always made the elf to something that one of the kids did wrong the day before. That way the kids felt as if he were letting them know it was in-appropriate

The Elf doesn't necessarily have to be doing naughty things. You can have the Elf doing whatever you choose and if depicting him doing something wrong isn't for you, then have him doing so etching helpful or whatever.

Very true. Our daughter is 12 though so she understands that it is not true, lol. We take turns each night setting him up so it is fun.

I feel like this could be true. I make sure our elf is doing innocently fun activities as to not cause any confusion.
