Ya, the melamine foam acts like a fine sandpaper on a microscopic level so scrubbing too hard on your skin would essentially give you frictional burns (rugburn) but it's not a chemical burn.

I would say no. When I used to work at a childcare they were banned because there were reports of children getting burns from them. Even if they don't have chemicals I suggest you do more research and then decide.
