We came, we saw, we contoured! How did we get through the day before Shade+Light??
This contour collection was a game changer for makeup mavericks everywhere! Inspired by an artist’s palette, Kat created six matte shades that look truly stunning on EVERYONE!
The contour and highlight pairs are arranged by undertone, so you get neutral, warm and cool shades! (But you can use all the shades no matter your undertone). Use the deeper contour shades to add natural shadow and depth to your face, then accentuate your best angles with the brighter highlight shades!

The formula is SO incredibly fine, we feel like we’re brushing on powdered silk. And speaking of brushes, we made one specifically for this very palette! Read all about our Shade+Light Contour Brush!

Kat Von D Shade + Light Face Contour Palette
This is a beautiful contour palette! I picked this one up after owning the Anastasia Beverly Hills one for so long and I found myself running out. The shades are so nice and I love the yellow color for setting the eyes. All the contours are so creamy and so blendable! I absolutely love this palette for contouring! I do have a couple issues with it though. The shades are not removable like the Anastasia ones. I found myself running out of the banana like shade pretty fast and me being unable to remove the shade and buy a new one online will not make me buy a brand new contour palette when most of the other shades aren't close to being use. This caused me to grab for my Anastasia one more because I can remove the pans and purchase new ones. One other thing is that the top 3 shades don't have very much product in them causing them to run out fast. I think all the pans should be the same size like Anastasia does. Overall I love this product.
I find the powders are highly pigmented and soft to the touch. The two contour shades on the ends lean cool and the one in the middle is more neutral-warm. The highlight shades are heavily pigmented as well and show up easily, even color correcting slightly. I am sh-1 in rcma and I find a use for each of these powders so it is very worth it and useful to me, though I can imagine a very pale person or a person with deep skin only using a few shades (or not being able to use any in the case of darker skin, I would love to see Kat come out with a deeper version of this palette for the girls who are ALWAYS left out). There was a small amount of fallout when I first got the palette, but after I got past the first layer or so it hasn't been as noticeable. The powders blend effortlessly. And the pan sizes are nice for fitting the entire brush in there. You really do get a lot of great quality product for the amount you are spending.
This is my holy grail contour palette. I did a ton of research about contouring palette's before I purchased this product, and I kept seeing great reviews for this over other palettes. Let me just say, Kat Von D products have yet to let me down. The three different options of both light and dark make this an easy buy for virtually any skin tone. I use the lightest dark when I'm my normal white-as-can-be self, and the darkest when I've been tanning. I have to say, I do use all of the colors EXCEPT the orange-ish shade (which is the 'darkest' light color). I don't mind not using it though, because with the rest of the palette being extremely spot-on, I will repurchase this again and again. I also must say, with having extremely dry and sensitive skin, this product has not dried me out or broken my skin out in any way. Love love love.
If you are a pale and cool-toned lady or gent who is tired of the same ole contour kits that seem to think orangey tones work for everyone (who has orange shadows on their face anyway?!), I highly recommend swatching this palette. I loved it on my skin. There's a nice variety of shades for a multidimensional contour that can be as dramatic or subtle as you would like without that awkward muddy orangey tone -- I will leave orange face makeup to Oompa Loompas, thank you very much. While I am very fair, the highlight tones still work on me as well (though I prefer the darkest highlight as a transition shade from my contour) aa I cannot speak for darker skin tones but it does appear that this kit could work for a variety of skin tones, but especially those with fair to medium skin, especially with a neutral or cool undertone.
It's average price for most high-end contour palettes. It worked best for me, although I've heard a lot of negative stuff about it. I am Asian with medium skin-tone and neutral undertones, for reference. The middle highlight is what sold me, as the highlights in other palettes did not show up or were very chalky looking on me. The dark contouring shades also worked well for me. Compared to Hoola, this is much better for me/my skin-tone (hoola is a bit too dark and a little orange-y). I use the lighter brown on my nose and the darkest one to give the contour on my cheeks some dimension (use the middle one all around). It could be a little more pigmented because I have to layer it (I've used Lorac once and that was really pigmented!) but it's great and I would recommend.
LOVE THE PACKAGING! I wish the palette ran cooler in overall tone, or at least had the first set of highlight/contour be cool-toned, the middle be more neutral-cool, and the last set be deeper and more neutral-cool. They all run warmer both in the pan, swatched, and applied. The texture of the powders is incredibly silky and smooth with a little bit of powderiness, but it’s not excessive, and it seems to make these incredibly easy to work with, so blending and diffusing the color on the skin isn’t frustrating. If you are fairer and prefer very subtle contours, this palette might be too dark overall, but the shades are quite forgiving and blendable, so I think that they can all be worn across most skin tones, just depending on the intensity of application.
I've tried contour creme sticks before and found one that I liked, but contouring was never part of my daily routine. While strolling a makeup aisle recently, my boyfriend asked if it was something I did and I didn't think more of the question. A week later, this was my birthday gift. He knew how much I loved the quality of the brand and he wanted to get me something new to play with and this was a perfect choice. The palette is easy to use, with a good range of shades, and I already had brushes extremely similar to hers so the compact alone was a great price. The colors are pigmented but blend easily so you could work up the right look without looking like a clown. Kat's quality continues to speak for itself so I will continue to be a loyal customer.
I bought the entire Shade + Light palette for one single shade: Shadowplay. I'm EXTREMELY fair (to the point where all the highlights in the palette are completely useless to me, as they're darker than my skin), but Shadowplay is one of the only contour shades I've ever found that isn't too dark or too orange. It's almost gray toned, which makes it a believable contour shade on me, and the other shades seem to work great on other skin tones too. It blends very easily and is nicely pigmented, so a little goes a long way. I contour with it every day, and have been for over a year, and I'm still not even close to hitting pan. I'm so glad the shades come in refillable pans so I can continue to buy just the one shade I use from now on!
The colors in this palette are highly pigmented and absolutely of a very high quality, so it's well worth the price. The palette style is ideal for those who have changing skin tones (summer/winter) so they need different colors for definition in terms of shadowing. However as someone who likes natural makeup, I do find myself going to a more basic bronzer for my day makeup (Benefit's Hoola) and I really only reach for the palette when going out and I stick to the first half of the palette even then. So for anyone interested in increasing their contour game this is totally for you but, if this would break the bank in some way or you aren't totally sure maybe a less professional set would be for you (NARS, Benefit, e.g.)
Q & A
I'm having troubles deciding which contour kit to get. Anastasia or Kat Von D?
I really want to try this out is it worth the money?
I've seen so many reviews and videos about this palette I want to know if this palette is dark because I have pale skin.. So I wonder if its too dark
I have been using a powder contour palette since contour became popular, but I have been considering the switch to a more liquid one. I've been torn between this palette and the Anastasia Beverly Hills palette and wanted to know which people prefer and why?
I have read so many reviews and videos about this palette. I want to know your thoughts on it? Should I spend the pretty penny and buy it or should I save my money? I'm in high school so I'm going for a natural look, is this palette good for that?
