Do you need to purchase a different one for a cat and a dog or will one work for both?

It depends on the kind of fur your dog and cat have. Both my dog and cat have short to medium hair so it works to use the same Furminator on both of them.

I have a big one meant for my dog but use it on my cat and it works fine. Just have to be a bit more careful because the brush is heavier and you don't want to damage the skin. :)

I say that it depends on the size brush you have and if it's for your pets' hair types.
