You have to prep your nail. Make sure you don't have any oils and apply a good base coat followed by a top coat.

Honestly, use a different polish. Even with my fail-proof anti-chip topcoat, Essie polishes still chip after two days.

They make 4 sided blocks you can use to buff your nails before applying any polish. It helps the polish have more grooves to really grip the nail. Then, as others have said, you need a good base coat, 1-2 coats of color and good top coat. Don't go for the fast drying ones, just get a quality top coat. It also helps to do what they do at salons: swipe across the tip of all your nails to make sure the polish goes around the edge, not just up to it.

In addition to a top coat, use a base coat as well... they have some from Sally Hansen that can be used as both, to make it easy for you when purchasing... By applying it first as a base it gives something for the essie polish to grab onto and stick... then once your polish is dry, add one more layer over it to seal it in and make it really shiny. It also helps when covering up minor imperfections/dings in the polish.

Make sure you clean your nails with a mild soap and warm water and even though a top coat is important to a chip free manicure, using a base coat helps the polish really stick to the nail. Some brands make a base/top coat all in one!
