A friend of mine uses his regularly to travel in Europe and the US. His hosts have been great, but his guests have been...questionable. Women (especially from Europe) tend to offer sex as payment for rooms. No thanks! I'll stick with airbnb.

Great concept. I haven't personally used the program, but my friends used "couch surfing" in Europe, and then had someone come stay with them through the program. They loved having the chance to learn about the other cultures and meet new people.

A lot has changed in the CouchSurfing community since I joined in 2007... sadly not for the better. Once upon a time it was a wonderful resource that was invaluable to my travels. At any point I could check online if there were other like minded travelers in the area who would like to explore an area, grab a drink, share helpful tips, or crash on their couch. Everyone had detailed profiles and great references and seemed to be active members in the comunity... BOTH hosting and surfing.
I have hosted people from all over the world and have also surfed in many different countries. The vibe of this global community was strong, happy, and warm. Everyone was always eager to meet and share their cultures!
These days, the site has grown far too much. It is no longer spread word of mouth between travelers. Now media has spread the news and people such as myself are bombarded with couch requests on a daily basis by many people with near empty profiles looking for a free place to crash or even to 'hook up'.
On our last backpacking adventure it was a challenge even to get a reply from potential hosts. There only seem to be handful of core couchsurfers that still make the most of the website and reflect a true couchsurfing spirit. Lets hope things will improve in time.
