Cannot say enough good things about this service. The first time you get your results it is very exciting but the excitement does not end there. The site continues to add new tests and if you elect to keep your DNA on file, they can give you new information about you as it becomes available! It is always a pleasant surprise when I have new information about my health, ancestors, etc., Also super cool being able to see long lost cousins!
It was interesting to understand what my genes have in common with others from similar backgrounds but I thought the analysis would be more specific to me- instead of an exact mapping of my unique DNA, the analysis was more about trends seen in those with similar ancestral backgrounds, not really unique to me. It was an expensive service so if I had done a bit more research I probably wouldn't have purchased knowing the limited results.
23 and me is very simple to use and gives you a great insight into your ancestry! I purchased the product with the health aspect also. I think I could have done without the added health product as it didn't shed much insight into myself. However, it was very interesting to see what the product had to say. I would definitely recommend this product if you are wanting to look into your ancestry. This product price point was affordable.
I got the product as a gift and the insight is amazing, it's hardly their fault I have a boring background and my entire map was blue. When I got the product it was cheaper than now but didn't offer the health reporting as the FDA were reviewing things, they have since added in limited health reports and doubled the price. I am not sure it is worth it at $200 but if you can get it as a deal I highly recommend it as it is fascinating.
My mother never met her own father, so we know nothing about that side of my heritage. When I took the 23andMe test (a Christmas present from my husband), I was hoping to get a DNA breakdown, but I wasn't anticipating how much information we would get back! It was affordable, easy to use, and I loved how I could check the status of it online. This will absolutely be something I recommend to friends, and it will make a great gift!
I purchased this kit after a friend recommended it, I also bought one for my fiancé. I love the results and the site in general is very thorough. I didn't like the process in which you have to submit the sample but nevertheless it got me the results. The price is steep but worth it.
4 Stars at this time because I am still waiting on my results. They shipped the box to me quickly and the instructions were easy to follow and shipping it to the lab was very easy. We got it on a mother's day special... you do have to pay for shipping, about $10 and that is to your home and to the lab. We then got another kit for my husband (even less then my kit) and will be sending that one out soon.
This product is incredibly interesting! It aligned with what I knew about my family, as well as provided additional insight into my heritage and my genetics. I loved diving into the Ancestry, Traits, Wellness, and DNA Relative Reports. Being able to participate in crowdsourced data for scientific research is pretty interesting as well. I enjoy following up to see what findings they've been able to correlate with the data.
Insane! Up until this point in my life- when asked about my heritage- i've said 50/50 Irish/Polish. Little did I know that I have traces of German, Czech, English and Greek in my blood! So awesome to see what characteristics run in my bloodline and how susceptible I am to certain disorders/diseases. I would recommend this to anyone and will definitely be buying 23andme for family members as gifts!
I was so excited for my results. They came in early and matched me with so many relatives. It was interesting to see my lineage. They do special offers for holidays so I would invest then. It’s a little pricey but so worth it. I got my mom and I one for Mother’s Day and they were about $60 each.
Q & A
Is really worth the money ?
Is there anyway I could get this for free and review it? I have heard nothing but good things!
Always wanted to try one of these similar products....worth it?
Has anyone tried their DNA tests? How does it compare to AncestryDNA? Do you get the ancestry analysis along with the breakdown of genetic predispositions (more likely to need more sleep, have curly hair, like coffee, be good at running, etc) or is it one or the other?
