I’ve been around long enough to remember when a “game night” didn’t involve Wi-Fi, headsets, or updates downloading in the background. Born in 1982, I grew up in a time when pulling a board game off the shelf meant you were settling in for something real competition, laughter, arguments, and usually someone flipping the board before it was all over. And for my family, Monopoly was king. There’s something about that box still basically unchanged that hits the same now as it did back then. The weight of the metal tokens, the feel of the paper money, the slow grind of buying up properties and building houses… it’s a kind of patience most things today don’t require. Back then, I learned early that Monopoly wasn’t just a game it was strategy, negotiation, and a little bit of ruthlessness wrapped in cardboard. Now I’m teaching my kids how to play, and it’s a different world for them. They’re used to fast paced everything instant results, quick resets, constant stimulation. So watching them sit down with Monopoly is interesting. At first, they want shortcuts. They don’t understand why it takes so long. But then something clicks. They start making deals, plotting moves, learning that losing early doesn’t mean you’re out if you play it smart. And just like that, it becomes what it was for me. You start seeing their personalities come out. One plays it safe, another goes all in, someone inevitably becomes the landlord nobody likes. And somewhere along the way, they stop asking how long the game will take and start asking if we can play again tomorrow. That’s the magic of Monopoly. It’s not just about buying Boardwalk and bankrupting your family it’s about sitting at the table together, unplugged, learning patience, strategy, and how to win (and lose) without a reset button. It may be old, but that’s exactly why it still works. Some things don’t need upgrading.
