Your New Personal Trainer, The Smartphone

Whether you’re a fitness maniac or just hitting the gym for the first time in a month or two, (or maybe a little longer... no judgment!) healthy motivation comes easily to very few. Luckily, in the new realm of “things my phone can do”, comes just this! Workout/Health Apps are the latest and greatest addition to our digital world, and WAY more cost effective than hiring a trainer. Whether you’re trying to train for a race, working out for better health, or just to look good in your Saturday night attire—there’s an app for that! Time to preemptively work off that Halloween candy and start downloading. Here are a few of my favorites thus far, including both those I’ve tried and ones I can’t wait to.

1. Nike Training Club

Price: Free

Starting out with my favorite... DOWNLOAD THIS RIGHT NOW. Simply put, this app is the bomb. Providing a variety of levels of workouts and tons of featured trainers, I’ve done abdominals with Serena Williams, deadlifts with Maria Sharapova, and Pilates with Gabby Douglas, and there’s so much more. Giving step-by-step instructions for each exercise, you can choose a level of difficulty as well as a time limit, within a 45, 30, and 15 minute range. The app records your total minutes completed, and as you progress (and your body progresses...;) ) you can unlock even more secret workouts! I love this app and greatly appreciate the boost of “girl power” it adds to my everyday. A must-get!

2. Zombies, Run!

Price: $3.99

If perhaps health or a tighter booty isn’t motivation enough for you to pick up the pace on those Saturday morning jogs, do you think being thrown into the middle of the zombie apocalypse would be? They say fear is the biggest motivator, and this app proves it. Here you star as the victim, as you escape zombies through an immersive experience via headphones. The guy running next to you may be a little confused as you sprint by with terror on your face... but this just sounds like too much fun to pass up. Perfect for the October season!

3. Seven Minute Workout

Price: Free

If your excuse to laziness is consistently revolving around your lack of time—bad news, this app solves just that. If you’re much too busy to get chased by the dead, this seven-minute push is the answer to all your problems. The logic lies in 14 different exercises each lasting for thirty seconds each. The intensive workout is short but to the point, and an easy way to fitness for the ladies and gents constantly on the move.

4. Calorie Counter- MyFitnessPal

Price: Free

Just like I have apps to track my spending, I have an app to count my calories. In the everyday life, who has the time to think about their burn to consume ratio... not me! Calorie Counter is one of the best apps that will help you to do so thanks to its massive library of over 3 million dishes and ingredients. Giving you the choice between scanning bar codes of groceries or manually adding your foods to the app, it also gives a social media aspect to encourage your friends to keep up their healthy habits and good work as you do the same.

5. WaterMinder

Following the theme of the importance of a healthy diet towards fitness comes this water hydration reminder and tracker. Most people have no idea how much water one should drink a day, and how big of an impact it has on the mind, body and spirit. Offering fun visual helpers and reminders (that can be turned on or off), hydration nation here we come!
