Retinol is big on the anti-aging market right now, but how much do you actually know about what it can do for your skin?

Catherine Colonia

We talked with Catherine Colonia, a Skin Care Therapist at Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa, to get the scoop on this powerful product!

+ Retinol is an over-the-counter strength Retinoid.

+ There are three prescription strength retinoids: tretinoin, tazarotene, and adapalene.

+ Tazarotene is the strongest, and has the potential to be more irritating than tretinoin.

+ Adapalene is the gentlest retinoid but may also be less effective. But for most people the OTC version will produce similar results; they will just take a bit more time!

Retinoids are a vitamin A derivative that helps with cell turn over of the skin. This helps them stimulate collagen production and exfoliate the skin. According to Catherine, they are great for everyone from teenagers to those with a few extra years. Everyone can benefit from a great retinoid product!

Retinoids can...

+ Help with troublesome acne

+ Prevent fine lines

+ Smooth out wrinkles

+ Minimize pore size

+ Reduce excess freckles

Retinoids can cause dryness, redness and flaking if you do not ease into the treatment. Catherine recommends introducing retinol to the skin only twice a week before increasing use to every other night. You should also avoid applying retinoids to wet skin. Those with sensitive skin should not use a retinoid. There is a two to three week period where you skin will be slightly irritated as it adapts to the retinoic acid and begins to tolerate the ingredients. But if you begin use and your skin becomes inflamed, itchy or flakey, retinoid use should be discontinued. If you're unsure about whether or not to use a retinoid, consult with an esthetician!

It takes about twelve weeks for most people to see results. Retinol is a long-term investment but well worth the wait for their many benefits! If you're looking for a retinol product, we've rounded up some of the best options available below!
