Beauty Dictionary: Microdermabrasion

With new products, shades, tips, and tricks coming out every week, how are you supposed to keep up with all that's going on in the beauty world? We've got you covered. Our Beauty Dictionary series will help you stay on top of all that fancy lingo! It's like SAT vocab...but way more glam.

The Word: microdermabrasion

What it means:  Basically an intense exfoliating treatment. It removes the dead skin cells on the outer layer of your face.

Also known as: A pain-free way to buff and polish the skin safely, usually with a wand that has a diamond or crystal tip.

What it does: Evens out your skin tone, gives you a glow, fights sun damage.

What it doesn't do: Fix deep wrinkles, dark brown spots, redness or growths.

In office or at home? If you want the big results, head to your dermatologist. The microdermabrasion systems used by licensed dermatologists have more power than at-home treatments. However, if you're looking for a light polish that will still get you visible results, at-home treatments are a good way to dip your toe into the world of microdermabrasion .

Try it at home:

Ole Henriksen POWER Peel™ PRO-strength Microdermabrasion/AHA Peel System, $50 at Sephora

Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Age Defying Exfoliator + Mini PoreDermabrasion, $79 at Sephora
