These amazing women bring products and services from concept straight to the shelves.
And if you're like us, you're counting down the days until the Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Rio. As much as we love the competition, patrioticsm, and let's be honest, Olympic-themed beauty products, the event is so much more than an excuse to wear bronze, silver, and gold makeup for two weeks. It's also about celebrating different countries and cultures from around the world, and this year, all eyes are on Brazil. In the spirit of the Olympics, we chatted with Brazilian-born-and-raised business woman, Valeria Cole, co-founder of Teadora. Get a special peek behind the Amazon-powered beauty brand and Valeria's best business tips, below!
What's the best job you've ever had?
"Aside from Teadora, I will always remember my time at Apple—I was so fortunate to be able to work with such amazing leaders and co-workers, delivering unparalleled product experiences; it was a time when I was constantly learning and growing, and I still use that experience every day. There was tremendous excitement at the time, both internally and from consumers."
To prep for an interview someone should always....
"Always do extensive research. Learn about the company and the competitors, and then learn about the people you are interviewing with. Figure out how your skills contribute and complement. That simple task goes a long way towards differentiating a candidate to get you in the door."
What is your favorite part about your job?
"Starting my own company gives me incredible diversity in my day, which I love. But the one thing that keeps me going is being able to talk directly to customers about their experience with a product I created. There is no better feeling than a customer telling me that they love the products and what we are doing with Teadora."
Any words of advice for women who want to work in the marketing or beauty industries?
"Continually learn—there are constantly new ways to reach customers, and understanding where customers are going and how they are currently interacting with brands will make you increasingly valuable. The beauty industry is also full of innovation, and there is so much going on in terms of ingredients, scientific breakthroughs, and the environmental and social aspects are increasingly important."
How do you handle setbacks—whether it be a missed opportunity, something not turning out your way, or disagreeing with a co-worker?
"I try to remember that different people may filter things differently and have different experiences. Most disagreements come from a lack of understanding—a coworker may understand something very differently than what I intended, or something may have happened. Whether a customer or co-worker, I try to see things from their viewpoint. I also try to always see setbacks as learning opportunities on how to improve things and not make similar mistakes in the future—EVERY setback is a learning opportunity."
What's the most valuable lesson you've learned while working?
"Always be open to learning new things by getting involved in new areas, interacting with different people, trying new things. Never say 'that’s not my job,' and be willing to push past discomfort or a lack of expertise, so you can become an increasingly valuable part of the team."
So, we have to ask—what's the best Teadora product of all time?
"The Brazilian Glow Rejuvenating and Radiance Oil, which I use every day, multiple times per day. It is the only multi-tasking oil I use, and it is great for sensitive and very dry skin like mine. I use it as a bath and shower oil, as a base prior to applying my facial moisturizer, and on the ends of my hair for split ends. This unique one-of-a-kind blend of Amazon superfruit oils and argan plant stem cells not only captures the spirit and healing power of this part of my homeland but also boasts tremendous anti-aging benefits, which indigenous peoples have used for millennia."
