By now, most skincare fanatics know that miracle, fix-it-all ingredients don't really exist. In fact, science shows that a beauty routine that incorporates several high-powered ingredients is the best way to combat signs of aging, skin damage, and all those other fun things we deal with on a daily basis. But, how do you know which ingredients are worth the hype? We're making it easy! In this series, we'll give you the must-know info on both trending and mainstay ingredients. This week’s ingredient is something that we normally think of as being a great addition to a garden or the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day (hint, hint), but it’s actually a brilliant ingredient in skincare products.
The Ingredient: rose
Also known as: Rosa, Rosa Centifolia Flower, Rosa Flower Water, Rose Absolute, Rose Otto
Quick take: We know that rose can be great in food (hello, rose water cookies!), but it can also be a nourishing ingredient for your complexion. Cindy Kim of the Silver Mirror Facial Bar in New York writes, “Rose otto is a fantastic ingredient in skincare. It's valued for its ability to promote skin cell regeneration, particularly in mature and sun-damaged skin. Rose otto is calming—both to the skin and the mood—and it soothes redness. Rose has a slight astringent quality to it, so it can nicely balance out heavier oils. Pure rose otto is very expensive so the price of the skincare product will reflect the cost of this gorgeous ingredient.”
Claims to fame:
Rose’s scent is what most of us may know it for, but the benefits don’t stop there. Meghan Campbell, a brand and product trainer at Lush explains, “All rose-based ingredients are used to provide the skin with the same beautiful benefits. Traditionally, roses have been used to soothe and tone the skin, but they are also renowned for their delicate, romantic floral fragrance. At Lush, we use rose in many forms. We distill rose petals into fresh infusions in our factories, ethically source the absolute and oil from a family owned and operated business in Senir, Turkey, and occasionally use rosebuds or rose petals in our bath products.”
Where to find it:
Mario Badescu Facial Spray ($7)
This refreshing spray is #1 in facial sprays on Influenster! It hydrates and refreshes tight, dry skin with the help of rosewater. Plus, it's wallet-friendly.
Fresh Rose Face Mask ($62)
There is a lot of rose packed into that white pot. It contains a whopping 50 percent pure rose water and approximately two-and-a-half roses per jar. There’s also some cucumber extract and aloe vera in there. The ingredients work together to hydrate and tone your complexion.
No, this doesn’t have the mystical dragon’s blood you’re thinking of. What it does have is the plant dragon’s blood and rose water. The multitasking combo helps revive, refresh, and hydrate skin. It will even help reduce the appearance of pores. Perhaps it is magical.
