The Trick to Faster Growing Hair

Let’s talk science for your scalp. Vocab term of the day: pH. Your hair’s pH plays a vital role in the health of your locks. With healthy strands comes bountiful, shiny hair–score! Your shampoo has an acidic scale that you probably aren’t taking note of. Don’t worry, it’s nothing that should keep you up at night. But, if you’re striving for faster-growing hair, consider products with pH balance.

Let’s break it down.

What pH exactly is: For those who aren’t science gurus (raises hand), pH is the measure of how acidic something is on a scale from 0-14, according to Live Strong. So, substances that are between 0-6.9 are acidic (like lemon juice or coffee), 7 is neutral (like water), and 7.1-14 (like toothpaste) is alkaline.

Why pH is important:

+ It determines how well products work for your hair

+ It protects hair from bacteria and fungus

+ It helps maintain your hair elasticity

+ It reduces risk of breakage from chemical treatments

What that means for your hair…

Healthy hair is around 4.5 to 5.5 on the pH scale. Alkaline hair results in duller looking strands. Using heat products and chemically treating your hair can cause an alkaline state. So, the trick to keeping your hair extra shiny, smooth and healthy is finding a low pH hair care product between 3.0-3.5.
