The Moment I Learned To Embrace My Curly Hair

Share Tweet

Do you know that long, straight hair with the gentle wave that looks effortless? That kind of hair that you can roll out of bed and just brush it? I've never had that. Growing up it seemed everyone I knew had straight, manageable hair. And in an effort to get this style, I'd spend an hour every day before school flat ironing my hair (If you're looking for a great straightener, I recommend the Babylis Pro Nano Titanium-Plated Compact Straightening Iron). Curly hair just wasn't the style, and in high school, it was my #1 enemy.

The moment I learned to embrace my curly hair? I remember the first day I ever wore my hair curly in June 2010. I had no idea what products I would need and was completely out of my comfort zone. In the beginning, I would scrunch my wet hair with gel to lock it in place. I soon realized that wearing my hair curly could get me up to an hour more sleep per day. After that, straightening became reserved for special events and eventually was phased out altogether.

My name is Kate, and I am 2 years straightener-free.

My hair evolution

For you other curly girls, I have type 3A curly hair. They are super defined ringlets that hold their shape but are prone to frizz. Finding the right products and the right haircut were key to me loving my curls! After a few bad cuts, I found Coco. She not only layered my hair properly but also gave me tips on how to style and best wear my hair.

Nearly 7 years later, I haven't touched a flat iron in years and wear my hair naturally every day. Let me share a few of the products I use to achieve perfect curls:

Product: L'Oreal Paris Hair Expertise® EverCurl Cleansing Balm for $11.99 at Ulta

L'Oreal Paris Hair Expertise® EverCurl Cleansing Balm

Why I LOVE it: I used to co-wash my hair using a regular conditioner, but my scalp would eventually get too greasy and I'd have to shampoo it. Then I switched to a cleansing balm like EverCurl and my life was changed. The low-lather formula not only helps moisturize my hair but also prevents product build up. I love the curly-focus of this product; the formula really works with my hair and makes styling much easier.

Product: Bumble and bumble Bb. Curl (Style) Defining Creme for $31 at Sephora

Bumble and bumble Bb. Curl (Style) Defining Creme

Why I LOVE it: My curly hair is prone to dryness and frizz, this hydrating styling product keeps my hair hydrated and in place! This styling creme is my go-to styling product. While my hair is wet I rub a fair amount of this creme through my hair and then twirl each curl around my fingers for a more defined spiral. This product is a mix between a leave-in conditioner and pomade.

I find it needs a little help to lock in a look, so I use Bumble and bumble Spray de Mode to hold my hair.

Product: Revlon Perfect Heat AC Motor Hair Dryer with Diffuser for $39.99 at Ulta

Revlon Perfect Heat AC Motor Hair Dryer with Diffuser

Why I LOVE it: If you have curly hair, you have to use a diffuser, it's simply a must. By deflecting the heat in different directions, the dryer doesn't disrupt the curl pattern and leaves tendrils tighter than ever! I always use my Revlon hair dryer on the lowest heat setting.

Product: Elle Extra Long Curved Bobby Pins 12 Ct for $4.99 at Ulta

Elle Extra Long Curved Bobby Pins 12 Ct

Why I LOVE it: I only use extra long bobby pins. My usual style involves pinning the curls closest to my hair back on one side. Normal bobby pins just don't grab the hair the same way. My hair also easily hides the elongated ends for a flawless look.

My advice to someone wanting to embrace the curl:

+Find a hairdresser who understands how curls work! The right haircut can change everything (for the better!).

+Learn your curl type! Knowing more about your curl pattern and porosity will help you understand how to best manage your individual curl.

+Experiment! I went through a few different styling products until I found the right combination for my hair. No two curls are the same, so don't be afraid to try something new!

+Embrace the bad hair days! Curls have a mind of their own, and some days you just won't be able to tame them. Embracing your curls on the bad days is just as important as loving them when they're at their best!
