The Gentlemen's Guide to Being Dapper: Great Grooming for the Best Beard

This guide is for the bearded gentlemen out there. It’s okay if you don’t have a beard yet, but you’re planning on letting it grow for a while. These tips apply to any and all men who want to give facial hair a go.

Bearded Statue

A beginning note: beards are not for everyone. Sometimes the look just doesn’t work for certain people’s faces, and sometimes the facial hair just doesn’t grow in a flattering way. These are not scary observations, just something to keep in mind. Give it a try. If it works, fantastic, and if not, clean shaven is not mere consolation.

There’s no need to decide on what style of beard you’re going to be growing yet. We’re focused more on the tools you’ll need to keep your beard in flattering, tip-top shape. That means grooming, treatment, and hygiene.

Electric Razor

For grooming, there are two basic tools that any beard grower is going to need. One of them you likely already have: a razor. Razors are good for extreme control of your beard, as in, going from beard to no beard, or going clean shaven on the neck. Where razors come up short, the second tool, a trimmer, comes in to play. Trimmers can be used to give you more precise control over the length and style of your beard. If you want to go natural on the neck, but controlled on the face, you’ll need a trimmer. If you want that 7 o’clock shadow look, you’ll need a trimmer. Trimmers come in all shapes and sizes and prices, so that whether you’re the type to just use one length setting every time, or you’re somebody who needs different settings and filters for different days, there’s something out there for you. Scissors are also an option if your beard is particularly lengthy, but be wary of keeping both sides even should you decide to go that route.

As far as treatment, beard oil is a simple but effective way to keep your beard soft and manageable. It also helps to tame more wild facial hair and smooth it down to make it presentable. Most beard oils have ingredients like argan oil that keep hair healthy, and they also have the added bonus of smelling great thanks to infusions of citrus, pine, and other great scents. They are also useful as a pre-shave oil, to soften your facial hair before applying shaving cream. Generally speaking, it takes just a few drops of oil on your palms to maintain your beard. There are plenty of different brands on the market to choose from, so it might be best to give several a try based on the various scents available.

Beard Oil

Hygiene for beards is actually relatively simple. There are specific brands of shampoo and conditioner for beards, but these are not totally necessary. There’s nothing wrong with using the shampoo and conditioner that you would use on your head. A beard is after all, more or less like the hair on your head, particularly if you’ve allowed it to grow to a significant length. You don’t need to wash your beard every day, and if you’re using oil on it than the need becomes even less, but a washing now and then, maybe once or twice a week depending on the elements you’re exposing it to.

That’s it. A starter’s guide to growing and keeping a great looking beard.
