How Rose-Marie Swift Is Changing the Way We Think About Organic Makeup
And totally crushing it, btw.
Some of today's biggest players in the beauty industry just happen to be the underdogs. We're chatting with the powerhouse women behind these brands to learn how they made their dreams a reality. This week, we're introducing you to a woman who's no stranger to the beauty world (she's been doing makeup for 35 years!) and the founder of organic beauty brand RMS Beauty, Rose-Marie Swift.
What was your first job in the beauty business?
"My first job was a cover for the Vancouver Magazine in the late '70s. It was a famous model from Scandinavia that came to Vancouver, Canada to visit her grandmother, and I was asked to do her makeup for the cover. That one shot started my career as a makeup artist."
What was the biggest challenge you faced starting out?
"The biggest challenge is always the non-believers and the tunnel vision people that get in the way. You have to be damn strong and stand up for your ideas, mostly when you are thinking out of the box. You have to be disruptive—that is the only way to change things."
What inspired you to start your own company?
"I never aspired to own my own company. It just happened. My big mouth got me in trouble back in 2004 when I posted the site www.beautytruth.com and I was challenged to create a brand. I had no choice. It was the universe seeking me out I guess."
You're very determined to create beauty products that don't skimp on performance but are utilize raw, food grade, and organic ingredients. Why is this mission so important to you?
"Organic is a guarantee of safety—organic is not a guarantee of quality. I wanted both. My innovative natural range is not only 100 percent free of harmful chemicals, but [it] also works to heal and nourish the skin with healthy and beautifying results, truly making it 'skincare with mineral color.' Selection of the highest quality raw ingredients is based on cultivation and processing criteria that sets this line apart from others. When a raw material is processed for use in cosmetics, it typically undergoes a lengthy process. I discovered the majority of ingredients used for natural cosmetics (organic or not) go through multiple steps from deodorizing, refining, and fractionating during production to heating to extremely high temperatures again during manufacturing. These processes render the ‘natural’ ingredients equivalent to man-made chemicals, stripping away all beneficial nutrients, anti-oxidants and enzymes that support healthy skin and life.
RMS Beauty products, on the other hand, are formulated with raw, food grade, organic ingredients in their natural state, from cultivation, straight through to manufacturing. Organic ingredients like raw coconut, cocoa and Shea butters as well as the highest quality cold-pressed organic jojoba oil, the most similar to the natural characteristics of human skin, contain some of the most powerful, nourishing and healing properties that the skin thirsts for. These oils also have a long shelf life, lessening the worries of rancidity and free radical damage to the skin. RMS Beauty also takes extreme care to use minimal heat in the manufacturing process, thus preserving every vital nutrient that nature provides. Unlike today’s synthetic counterparts, this technique allows natural healing and life force attributes —such as enzymes, minerals, vitamins and most of all, antioxidants—to remain fully intact and naturally penetrate and rejuvenate skin.
How has your past experience as a makeup artist aided your current role?
"I have worked with some of the most beautiful women in the world, and I have worked with almost every beauty product on the market for many many years. From that alone, I’ve learned a lot about the impact of daily exposure to chemicals in beauty care products with varying skin types and ages. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t live up to its promises. I see the results of taking a quick-fix approach to looking good. I know first-hand the price our health can pay in the pursuit of beauty. I realized that what women need are skin care, color cosmetics, toiletries that are as pure as possible, lines that create a solid foundation for anti-aging and long-term beauty. That’s why RMS Beauty exists."
What would you say to someone who says adopting a natural beauty routine is too hard?
"The daily routine between using a chemical laden product vs an organic/natural product has nothing to do with being harder. They are exactly the same. The big problem lies in your head space…that is it!"
Where did you see yourself at 20?
"I was still dreaming and partying."
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
"Retired and surrounded by luxury and light blue ocean. Funny to ask that at my age."
What empowers and fulfills you as a businesswoman?
"Every day that a new woman embraces healthier beauty products and I see the growing response to my brand for that reason alone, is the ultimate feeling of fulfillment."
What is the best business advice you've received?
“Always own your own company outright and never let anybody have access to your bank account.”
What is the best beauty advice you've received?
"Less is more."
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
"Having a 'healthy for you' beauty brand that is finally being recognized. Making an impact is a better direction then just profit."
What is one piece of advice you'd give other women looking to break into the beauty business?
"Never take no for an answer."
What are the top three products from your line you can't live without?
"Coconut Oil, Beauty Oil, and my red lipstick."
What's next in 2017 for RMS?
"Lots of stuff…….can’t tell you yet. Spies are out there. Just teasing!"
