I really love a good gadget. Like a lot. I routinely use a blue light on my face to fight last-minute pimples. And, I've been converted to an as-seen-on-TV hair straightener despite my protests. So, when I learned that the skincare gurus at H2O+ were launching a little tech device of their own, I knew it had to be mine.
The product: H2O+ MiLi® Skin Moisture Meter (free in May with any purchase of Oasis Hydrating Treatment or Ultra Hydrating Cream; after May it's bundled with the Oasis Hydrating Treatment for $45 or Oasis Ultra Hydrating Cream for $49)
What it is: A handheld device that detects your skin's moisture level on your hands, face, neck, and eyes. Track results with a bluetooth connected app.
Our take: OK, so I'll admit I'm not usually overly dry. I have pretty normal combination skin that really only varies based on the weather or if I'm getting a little too peel happy. But I had been noticing a bit of flakes creeping up when I applied my powder foundation, so I figured I better see what's up. Plus, toys are fun!
My H2O+ kit came with the MiLi Moisture Meter and both the classic Oasis Hydrating Treatment and Ultra Hydrating Cream, so I could decide which product would be best for my skin based on my moisture results.
The MiLi Meter itself couldn't have been easier to use. In about five minutes I had downloaded the MiLi Pure app from the app store and got it connected via bluetooth to my device. From there, all I had to do was turn on the device, select which area of skin I wanted to test (I opted for my face first) on the app, and lightly press the tip of the device (the side with the two silver balls on the end) on skin. On the app, I could see the moisture meter rise. Science in action!
For my face, I clocked in at 35.2 percent. According to the device's guide, the average normal range for the face is 32 to 42 percent. Whew, normal. But just barely. Next, I moved on to my hands. Here I'll admit I wasn't worried. I keep at least three hand creams on my desk (my go-to now being the H2O+ Teak Rose On the Move Intensive Hand Cream) and routinely load my digits up with Burt's Bees Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Cream at night. Shockingly, the moisture on my hands read 32.8 percent. This is surprisingly low on the normal range (30 to 38 percent).
To be honest, I skipped my neck and eyes as I'm really more concerned about my hands and face. Oops! Although I was normal for both my hands and face, I was a little concerned that I was in the lower range of normal. Enter a tall drink of water to save the day. H2O+ Oasis Hydrating Treatment was my selection of choice. It has amazing reviews on Influenster and is a product I've tested before, so I knew the water-gel formula should do the trick. It's a unique bright blue gel that feels cool and creamy. It sinks in almost immediately and contains a Sea Mineral Complex that delivers the moisture equivalent of eight glasses of water. Plus, it's chalk full of marine extracts like wakame, sea lettuce, and sea fennel, which deliver vitamins A, C, E, and provitamin B.
I put a small later of this gel on my face and hit the sack. The next day I decided to track my skin. My face came in at 37.2 percent (about two points higher) and my hands came in at 36.4 percent (about four points higher). Day one and I'm already on the uptick!
Overall, I was intrigued at how the MiLi quickly detected changes in the skin (and how fast the Oasis Hydrating Treatment plumped me up!). Because I don't have chronic dry skin—bless—I don't see this being something I need to monitor daily. However, every beauty nerd loves a new toy, and as a beauty editor, I find it valuable to test the efficacy of my favorite products!
