Whether you're testing the products out for the first time thanks to our Bonita VoxBox or you've been a fan for years, you've no doubt discovered that Madam C.J. Walker haircare products have a cult following and a track record for treating hair right. Read on to learn all about the rich history of the brand and the high-quality ingredients that go into each product.

About the brand: Named for America’s first female self-made millionaire, Madam C.J. Walker, this brand is a performance-driven line that "has been formulated with high-quality natural ingredients and a first-to-market dual encapsulation oil technology and includes cleansing, styling, and treatment solutions for all hair types," explains Richelieu Dennis, founder and CEO of Sundial Brands, which manufactures Madam C.J. Walker.

Who is Madam C.J. Walker: It's impossible to talk about the haircare line without first taking a look at the woman behind the brand's name. Born Sarah Breedlove in 1867 on the same Louisiana plantation where her parents had been enslaved before the end of the Civil War, Madam C.J. Walker grew up as an uneducated farm laborer and laundress, who transformed herself into a highly successful business woman and philanthropist. The inspiration for her business venture came from her own personal experience of hair loss. She created and sold "Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower," a scalp conditioning and healing formula and became the first person to devise and scale a business model that addressed the haircare and beauty needs of women of color.

What sets the brand apart: Particularly notable is the brand's encapsulation technology. "Our Dual Encapsulation Technology infuses hair with two natural oils—one reparative, the other, style-enhancing—to deliver nourishment exactly where hair needs it most," says Dennis. "Tiny microspheres infuse hair with targeted, time-released nutrients to rapidly boost conditioning benefits," she adds. The haircare line consists of four collections, including three styling collections formulated with six multi-tasking oils that help nourish, condition, detangle, and seal in moisture and one treatment collection. Madam C.J. products are also free of parabens, sulfates, formaldehydes, or phenoxyethanol, so hair gets all the good stuff and none of the bad!

Product low down: With five collections to choose from, it's hard to pick a favorite product. But here are some best sellers to help you get started:

Brassica Seed & Shea Oils Silkening Blow Out Crème: Designed to reduce styling time by making hair smoother during your blowout, this crème relies on broccoli (brassica) oil to create body and shine. In case you don't know, brassica is a natural alternative to silicone that provides the smoothness and luster without added buildup. Added shea oil makes for a deeply conditioning treatment.

Dream Come True Wonderful Deep Conditioning Masque and Wonderful Pre-Wash Protein Treatment : "If you are coloring or heat styling your hair often, this mask is going to be your next holy grail product," explains Dennis. Formulated with shea butter for moisture, willow to condition the scalp, and coconut oil to add super shine and prevent split ends, this masque is a must for all hair types. To get the full effect, pair with the Pre-Wash Protein Treatment Shampoo to restore and rebuild dry, brittle strands. Think of this as your hair's personal enforcer as it helps strengthen and protect!
