From running an eco-friendly dry cleaning business in Florida to building a global organic product line, Dean Neiger learned early on that ingredients matter. The Sky Organics Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer is dedicated to making beauty and household products that are affordable and safe for everyone. We grabbed a few minutes with Neiger to learn more about his newest collections and what sets his company apart from other brands.

Dean, you founded Sky Organics in 2015 with your brother Steven. What’s it like working with family?

We love it. We’re very complimentary so it works well. Plus, we each have our own, separate roles within the company so we can each do our own thing while keeping the other one in check.

What gap in the market were you trying to address by launching an organic brand?

‘Natural’ in the beauty and personal world has become more of a buzzword than a real standard. The customer is confused about that, and rightfully so. We wanted to elevate the standard of what it means to be natural, and that is why most of our items have certifications, like USDA organic, that they trust. Additionally, we believe in being reasonably priced, so people don’t have to choose between better for you products and the rest.

So what really makes Sky Organics stand out from other organic or “green” brands?

“Green” and “natural” are loosely defined buzz words that have no real standard in the space. So, we created our own standard. We attain the USDA organic certification wherever possible because it’s the most widely trusted seal among consumers who purchase both organic and non-organic products (Statista). We have a three-pronged approach that sets us apart:

  • a value price point for high quality and organic products,
  • expansive distribution,
  • and an understanding of what the standard is in the natural space by relying on third-party certifications.

We want to educate our consumers about what is best for themselves, their family and the planet. Consumers should look for brands that are transparent about what they are offering.

Prior to building Sky Organics, you and Steven launched Dryeco, Florida’s first “green” dry cleaning service. How did you translate your learnings from this business into your next one, Sky Organics?

We were the first dry cleaner in the South Eastern region of the country to be certified 4 Leafs by the Green Cleaners Council. As we started gaining market share, other dry cleaners saw that customers were looking for eco-friendly alternatives and started switching their practices to eco-friendly ones. We elevated the standard and the rest of South Florida dry cleaners followed. We truly changed the landscape of the industry in Florida. We learned that consumers trust when they see certifications, so we made sure that Sky Organics products were also certified.

And now you make a lot of different kinds of products, which are some of your favorites and why?

We’ve released some amazing products, but my two favorite products right now are the Day Serum and Night Serum from our Youth Boost collection. The Day Serum is a lightweight, water-based serum that gives my skin a refreshed feel, and the Night Serum is made with amazing oils like rosehip, jojoba, and marula that my skin has been loving.

Yes, you recently launched two new skincare lines, Youth Boost and Blemish Control. You also tapped into the haircare space earlier this year with the launch of Curl Care. Why did you decide to create these new collections?

As we became experts on 100% pure, single ingredients, we decided it was time to use those ingredients to formulate our very own products. Our Curl Care collection was especially important for us because consumers in the textured haircare space look primarily at ingredients, and we felt that our ingredients had to be shared.

What’s next for Sky Organics?

We are working on expanding our hair care collection with new hair oils with the ingredients we know and love, like our castor oil, plus sourcing new international ingredients that we haven’t worked with before.

How important are online reviews and customer feedback to the success of your business?

We have over 100,000 reviews on Amazon, so customer feedback has become a huge deal to us. We are living in a time where consumers are becoming reliant on reviews to influence whether or not they will buy a product, so not only do reviews help us gauge how our customers are feeling about their purchase, but they also help other customers make more informed purchase decisions.

What is your advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs?

My advice would be to just take that first step. Take the risk and just do it. Don’t let your fear of failure hold you back from acting. It’s also very important to have a strong support system or a team that will add value to what you want to do, not hinder your progress so choose carefully who you work with.
