Where science meets beauty...

In order to ensure you're getting the most out of your skincare products, we're breaking down some of the most common—and some not so common—ingredients found in skincare products. In the past we've decoded copper, caffeine, charcoal, and blue tansy. Up next, an ingredient that only looks tricky.

The ingredient: niacinamide

Also known as: vitamin B3

Quick take: Known as a skin-restoring ingredient, it's commonly found in anti-aging products to tone, brighten, and even out skin tone.

Claims to fame: A form of vitamin B3, niacinamide is found in many foods such as yeast, meat, fish, milk, eggs, green vegetables, beans, and cereal grains. But, it also offers some top-notch skincare benefits as well. Without giving you a total science lesson, niacinamide a.k.a. vitamin B3 has been shown to reduce the decline of two enzymes (NADH and NADPH, if you're getting fancy), which aid in creating a strong barrier on skin to help protect against pollution, aggressors, and other external factors.

Where to find it:
