Ingredient Breakdown: Moringa
Green, green everywhere.
This ingredient is something that you might be familiar with if you’re into everything green beauty-related on Instagram or if you’re a #plantparent.
The Ingredient: morninga
Also known as: morninga oil, moringa pterygosperma, moringa oleifera
Quick take: Moringa oil is a versatile product from the moringa plant. You can find it in everything from haircare products to skincare ones to even things for your nails. And best of all it’s a natural ingredient straight from Mother Nature packed with goodness. ELEMIS VP of Global Education Annet King told us, "It has many uses and is suitable for many skin conditions. Known to have very high concentrations of antioxidants when compared to other oils (evening primrose, macadamia, jojoba.) Its beneficial for dry, aging, and polluted skin but is also antiseptic and anti-inflammatory."
Claims to fame: Emily Cunningham, of True Moringa, knows the power of moringa and has based a whole brand around it. And, if you’re hesitant about using oils, you don’t have to worry with this one. “Moringa oil mimics the skin's natural sebum production, so it helps to stabilize oil production for combination or oily skin, and deeply nourishes normal and dry skin. It's also dry and gentle enough for sensitive skin,” she explains.
What’s more is that moringa is packed with goodness. Cunningham says, “Moringa oil has the highest naturally occurring concentration of behenic acid, a key ingredient in hair conditioners and moisturizers. It has unique plant hormones, like cytokinins, proven to stimulate cell growth and delay aging and fatty acids like oleic and linoleic acid to combat dryness and permeate deep into the skin to provide lasting hydration and moisture.”
As for that telltale greasy oil feel, Cunninham says you don’t have to worry about that with moringa oil. It absorbs into skin and it’s suitable for all skin types.
