Best of the Year: Our Senior Editor's Top Beauty Items of 2018
So far, we've brought you our Social Media & Community Strategist and Social Media & Community Manager's 2018 Greatest Beauty Hits, and now, we're wrapping up with our Senior Editor's pick. From haircare to skincare and makeup, Caitlin is sharing her absolute favorite finds of the year.
"This was hands down one of my favorite new launches—and VoxBox select!—of 2018. I have been suffering from a few breakouts and unevenness this year, and Farmacy's powerful AHA serum totally transformed my skin. It's a pretty powerful formula of 14 percent exfoliating AHA, so I can't use this serum daily—only about two, maybe three times a week—but when I do, I instantly notice smoother, more even skin the next morning. I can already tell I'll be going through several more bottles come 2019."
"Another one of my MVPs of the year was actually a product that launched later in the year. StriVectin's Night Oil is the first retinol product that I've used and actually stuck with. Typically, retinol is too strong for me, but this oil is light and gentle. It more of a dry oil texture and sinks into my skin very quickly. And each time I use it, my skin feels a little brighter, hydrated, and plumper. And I know other Influensters agree with me—this fall launch already boasts 4.5 stars on Influenster!"
"Although not a new product, DHC's Lip Cream was probably my most-used product of 2018. I kept a stick of this at my desk since March and it's a sad little nub right now. Unlike other balms, this one isn't waxy. And unlike glosses or oils, it's not sticky either. When I apply it, my chapped, dry lips feel literally instantly better, and what's more, that feeling actually lasts. I don't find myself having to reapply every few minutes."
"I was introduced to this brand earlier this year and after reading some reviews on Influenster, I knew I had to give it a go. Although I've been a fan of nearly every Biossance product I've tested, my standout star is the Squalene + Omega Repair Cream. I don't typically reach for heavy creams because they tend to get oily and case me to breakout, but this one has done neither to my skin! Yes, it's on the heavier side of facial creams, but it sinks in so nicely and locks moisture into my combo skin. And, I've yet to breakout while using it!"
"If you can't tell, 2018 has been the year of unwanted breakouts for me. Glossier's new Zit Stick has helped keep that under control for me. The potent pen resembles a Tide Stick but contains a powerful dose of salicylic acid that goes on quickly to put pimples in place. I've used this in the AM and nearly watched a breakout disappear by the time I go to sleep that night."
"For some reason, I really struggled to find a good shampoo and conditioner routine this year. I just couldn't seem to find a shampoo that felt like it made my hair clean post marathon-training runs. But Kérastase's take on the micellar trend did the job for me. This cleansing shampoo really removed all the excess product, oil, sweat, and other various gross things we'd like to pretend aren't in our hair for me. I just finished my bottle and am in desperate need of a refill!"
"I loved following up my Kérastase with a drugstore favorite from Target. Kristin Ess's The One Signature Conditioner really became the one for me in 2018. The creamy formula leaves my hair silky smooth and shiny, just like I left the salon. And I'm not the only one who found love—this conditioner has a 4.7-star rating on Influenster!"
"I'm not much of a fragrance person, but when I got a bottle of Commodity's Wool, I couldn't stop spraying it—on everything. This scent is a far cry from fruity or floral fragrances. It has notes of Bourbon vanilla and Haitian vetiver, which give it just a hint of a deeper and smokier scent. I love spraying it on my skin as well as hair and clothes."
"I'm not much of a full-face-of-makeup gal, so anything I can use to cover up a bit but keep it natural is my speed. I've already been a fan of Insta-famous brand, Onomie, so when they dropped a setting powder that masks shine, adds a touch of concealing power, and contains skin-treating AHA, I scooped one up immediately. And I wasn't disappointed. Although it might still be an indie pick, I'm not alone—Influensters also love this powder, giving it 4.6 stars!"
"Lastly, how could I not pick a Fenty product as one of my Best of 2018? Although any of RiRi's products are worthy contenders, nothing has converted me to more of a regular makeup-wearer than the Mattemoiselle lipstick. I have several shades of this lipstick, but Spanked has truly become my ride or die. The burned red has become my go-to for weddings, important work meetings, on-air videos, and more. This 4.5-star lippie is a 2018 super star that's sure to make it to 2019 for me."
