How To Properly Use Those Priming Oils You're Seeing Everywhere

News flash: They're here to stay.

You know what primers are. You know what facial oils are. But what happens when you blend the two together? No, it's not utter chaos. Instead, it's actually a wonderful hybrid that hydrates and primes the skin for your perfect makeup application—or barefaced look because we know you can rock that, too! Get all the info you need about how to properly use those facial priming oils that you've been seeing creeping up lately.

The scoop: So, get this. Priming oils aren't that new! They might be garnering some recent attention, but they've been in beauty bags for years. (Hello, Smashbox!) Basically, priming oils are lightweight facial oils that are designed to provide skin with hydration needed to get skin ready for foundation application. Typically, they won't be "treatment" based like the other facial oils you use at night. And, because they're meant to be applied right before applying makeup, they're typically non-greasy, quick drying, and give a luminous gentle glow.

Why they're necessary: If you find yourself not loving the feel of a normal primer—they can be a big thick—or don't love the "mask" effect they can create, an oil-based primer is for you. The oil of the primer instantly sinks into your skin and hydrates skin, all while prepping it for makeup application—sans an extra layer of product.

How to use them: Use your priming oil just as you would your primer, a.k.a. prior to applying makeup. However, just as with any oil, it's best to gently pat your oil into your face as opposed to rubbing or smearing it in. This helps with absorption and to ensure that the product properly does its job! Also, we recommend applying your oil and then letting it have time to absorb properly before going right into your facial makeup application. So perhaps work on perfecting your cat eye or get dressed while your oils sinks in!
