How to Protect Yourself Against Pollution

Share Tweet

By now, you've likely worked SPF into your daily skincare routine. (And if you haven't, what are you waiting for?) But UV rays aren't the only thing you need to guard yourself against. Pollution is a growing concern in the skincare world. How might you ask? Let us break down the scary results of pollution, plus how to protect yourself against it!

What is pollution: This might sound like a no-brainer, but pollution is contaminants caused by exhaust fumes, smog, smoke, industrial waste, tobacco, chemicals, and yes, even the ozone.

What does it cause: Other than being bad for the environment and your health, pollution can affect your skin. Pollution can create oxidative stress and harmful free radicals, which as we know can cause a disruption and inflammation in skin's barrier. In addition, microscopic particles in the air can clog pores! Exposure to this over time can increase the likelihood of premature aging, sagging skin, loss of luster, discoloration, and dreaded lines and wrinkles.

How to fight it: Thankfully, the beauty world is taking note of this harmful skin aggressor. There are many beauty products touting anti-pollution benefits. And many contain UVA and UVB protectors, so you can get in that SPF fix too!
