Braid Bible: The Milkmaid
If you tried out our Pigtail Dutch Braids (aka inverted French braids), then this Milkmaid masterpiece will be a piece of cake for you! Normally we would say anyone can do this, but in order for this braid to be totally perfect, medium-to-long hair is key. So stop, drop everything, and grab a brush and hair tie—it's Braid Bible time! This week we'll show you how to create this braid by walking you through some easy, step-by-step instructions.
Step 1: Make sure your hair is completely brushed through to avoid any tangle trouble mid-braid.
Step 2: Divide your hair into two equal sections and make pigtails toward the nape of your neck. We will braid the left side first, so twist up the right side and secure it with a clip or just let it hang.
Step 3: Separate the hair in the left ponytail into three sections and prepare to weave a classic three-strand braid. Start with the right piece over the middle, then the left over the middle, and so on. Be sure to make even strands for a cohesive look!
Step 4: Repeat the three-strand classic braid pattern until the end of your hair is reached.
Step 5: At the bottom of the braid, tie it with a hair elastic. Use these hair ties to keep it subtle. We used Goody SlideProof Spiky Soft Touch Hair Elastics so the steps would be easier to see, but we suggest the clear elastic for an understated everyday look.
Step 6: Repeat steps 3-5 on the remaining right half of your hair.
Step 7: Now it's time to pin your braids up...with the help of bobby pins, of course. It's simple, run the length of your braid to the top of your head (and if the braid is long enough to continue, let it!) and fasten with pins. In our example, we used three at the top, but our model, Kate, has medium length hair, so adjust yours accordingly!
Step 8: Repeat with the other braid, and you're done! For a softer look, feel free to pull a few small, face-framing strands of hair out.
