An Expert's Guide to a '90s Dark Lip

Scrunchie optional.

It doesn't take but one scroll through your Instagram feed to realize the '90s are here to stay (again). From crop tops, bucket hats, and chokers to no makeup-makeup, glitter cheeks, and dark lipstick, what's old is new again for the Millennial crowd. And we're drawing some major '90s inspiration from Millennial mogul Gigi Hadid, who has mastered the dark lip, taupe smokey eye, and dewy skin look flawlessly. To help you master the trend, we tapped editorial and celebrity makeup artist Juliette Perreux to break down everything you need to recreate the look for yourself.

Step 1. Start with your favorite foundation or tinted moisturizer to cover the face. Juliette likes NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer ($45 at Ulta), as it leaves skin glowy and gorgeous just like Gigi’s, but you can use what you like! Apply concealer where needed.

Step 2. To get that luminous glow, apply Marc Jacobs Beauty Glow Stick Glistening Illuminator ($42 at Sephora), as it's easy to swipe directly onto your cheekbones for a dewy effect à la Gigi. "This look is all about the glow, so don't hold back with the highlight!" says Juliette. Just be sure to blend it in after applying. Swipe the highlighter on top of the cheekbones, the center of the forehead,  the bridge of the nose, the Cupid's bow, chin, brow bone, and the inner corners of eyes, as well.

Step 3. Skip the blush on this look! "It's all about the skin, the lip, and the soft sultry eyes," explains Juliette. Add a little contour under the cheekbones if you want. Try using Clinique’s Chubby Stick Sculpting Contour ($24 at Sephora) to enhance that deep contour.

Step 4. When it comes to the eyes, it's all about making those peepers pop. Blend a taupe shadow all over the lid and slightly above the crease. Apply the shadow along the lower lash line as well. Juliette likes tarte's Tartlette Force of Nature palette, which has a variety of everyday, natural shades. Next take a cooler brown shadow color like "bombshell" from the tarte palette and add a small amount to the outer edge of your eye socket. Blend it out beyond the eye into the crease and add a bit under the outer edge of your lower lash line as well. "This will deepen the smoked look and give it dimension," explains Juliette. Finish your eyes with two coats of mascara such as L'Oréal Voluminous Original Volume Building Mascara ($7.99 at Ulta) on the top lashes and one coat on the bottom ones. Lastly, take your highlighter again and dab a bit just on the center of your eyelids.

Step 5. Now to the star of this look: Gigi's deep ombré lip. To get Gigi’s lip, Juliette says to pair a darker lip shade and a nude lip shade together rather than trying to rely on one product to get the look. Start by painting your lip with the darker shade first. Next use your finger to dab the nude color onto the center of your lips to create the ombré effect. Pro tip: Keep blending the colors out with your finger until the edges have blurred together. In need of some lip color inspo? Try Ice + Jam Cosmetics lip color in “NotHisWife" for the plum color and Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. lipstick in "Nude Kate."

Voilà! You're all set to go out and rock that '90s vibe!
