Stumped when trying to find a healthy snack you actually like? Trail mix, one of my favorite snacks to nibble on, is just that—a mix. Meaning you can create your own trail mix based on your tastes, based on what types of dried fruit you prefer, or even down to what percentage of the trail mix you want to be chocolate (I did say trail mix is supposed to be healthy, but that could be subjective). That being said, there is a general formula to follow when throwing together your mix; if you want to stay true to the trail mix virtue, start with these components:

Nuts + Dried Fruit + Grains + Seeds + Sweets*

(* Like I said, try to keep sweets to a minimum and the other ingredients well balanced!)


Here are some of my favorite ingredients when putting together my trail mix:


Peanuts / Almonds / Cashews / Walnuts / Pistachios 





Raisins / Mixed berries / Mango / Apples  / Banana chips 




Cereal / Pretzels / Granola / Popcorn / Cheerios






Hemp / Sunflower Kernels / Pumpkin / Sesame Seeds / Flax
