Gift Guide: How to buy for your guy

Stumped about what to get for the guys in your life?  Freddie Matara, one of our favorite indie men’s designers, is here to help.  Matara has built a niche for himself creating custom leather cuffs, which he sells in his online shops on eBay and etsy.  He’s a one man show, covering everything from design and construction to sweeping the floors at the end of the day in his Brooklyn shop.  So what do you need to know when choosing a gift for your guy? Here are some ideas.

STAY SIMPLE

The best gifts are ones that will be worn, so it’s important to think about how your guy can easily incorporate your thoughtful gift into his life.    “Classic styles are easy because they can be defined by the individual, and not the other way around,” Matara says.

CHOOSE CLASSIC MATERIALS

Think about how the piece will age, as these are the items that will be treasured.  Look for things made from leather, wool, and wood -- these are the products that will stand the test of time.

GO WITH AN ACCESSORY

"An accessory is great because it’s not a big investment,” Matara says.  Things like cuffs, watches, and bags can be easily incorporated into your guy’s everyday routine, too -- a major win for you because it means he’ll actually use that great gift you got him.

Still need help? We've scoured the web to bring you our picks from our favorite indie menswear designers. (We get a special thrill out of shopping small and discovering new and upcoming talent.)
