6 Common Habits That Are Ruining Your Skin

We’ve heard time and time again various ways to reduce breakouts: lay off the sugar, don’t sleep with makeup on and change pillowcases. So, what happens when you think you’re doing all the right things and nothing seems to work? What you might not know are all the bad habits you unknowingly indulge in a day’s routine. So, we asked celebrity facialist and La Mer’s Global Skincare Advisor, Joanna Czech, to shed some light on the bad habits messing up our skin game. With clients of flawless complexion like Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett, needless to say, we were all eyes and ears.

1. POPPING YOUR OWN PIMPLES

“Popping your own pimples is a bad habit, let the experts handle extractions,” she says. “When I perform extractions, I apply pressure at a downward, 90-degree angle, which is perpendicular to the skin’s surface. This is hard to replicate yourself and you end up making the infection worse by causing it to permeate deeper.”

She recommends resisting the temptation to pop; instead, use spot treatment like Protective Nourishment Pumpkin Peel. It’s made of pure pumpkin extract and 5% glycol acid--it’ll nix pimples without causing dehydration or hyper-pigmentation.

2. OVER EXFOLIATING

"Over-exfoliating, or using a harsh cleanser seems like a good idea, but in reality, they can remove the skin of its hydrating oils, making your skin more vulnerable. Exfoliating should be done no more than 3 times per week, and you should always use a moisturizer afterwards.”

Czech swears by Biologique Recherché P50 Lotion, an exfoliating toner that balances the pH in your skin. It will make your skin look brighter and clearer. As a follow-up, she recommends a dab of Crème Masque Vernix or La Mer Moisturizing Cream.

3. TOO MUCH CHLORINE EXPOSURE

Czech says even just rinsing off with water, the residual chemical can stick around on your dermis. “I recommend using REN Neroli and Grapefruit Body Wash to strip the chlorine— lather the body wash well and scrub your body. That should do the trick!”

4. YOUR SHOWERS ARE TOO HOT AND TOO LONG

“Extreme temps can throw off the natural balance of your skin and cause dehydration,” she says. “Opt for warm water, or cap your steamy shower off at the 5-minute mark.” To combat the dryness, Czech loves mixing La Mer Renewal Oil in La Mer Body Cream after stepping out of the shower.

5. YOU RELIGIOUSLY USE MAKEUP WIPES

Czech thinks you should absolutely nix those makeup wipes in your cabinet. “Makeup remover can strip your skin of its natural oils, while makeup wipes dehydrate and spread dirt and grime all over your face.” She recommends opting for a cleanser that does double duty, like Fresh Soy Cleanser, which removes the toughest makeup without removing your skin’s natural oils.

6. YOU'RE OVER DOING IT WITH THE VITAMINS

“Very often we think taking vitamins is something good for our skin, but it can be overdone. Depending on the vitamins, if you take large amounts they can cause multiple breakouts.”
