No need to feel guilty about pre-gym prepping, we’ve all been there! Whether you’ve put on a full face, or just opted for a splash of mascara, we’ve all worn makeup to the gym. Unfortunately, when we do this we put ourselves at the risk of foundation sliding right off our faces. Well, lucky for us, there are products out there that are just fine for sporting during workouts, because who knows who you’ll run into on the track!

Sweat is conducive to breakouts, and combining that with a full face of makeup isn’t ideal. If you’re not careful about the beauty products you wear to the gym, you could be doing some serious damage to your skin.

Rochelle Rae, founder of Rae Cosmetics, told Cosmpolitan that oil-based makeup is notorious for trapping the skin with sweat under your makeup, which can cause breakouts. And as far as mascaras go? Waterproof is the way to go! It won’t sweat down your face. Blush? Keep your NARS Orgasm at home, you’ll be rosy enough five jumping jacks in!

PRO TIP: Carry a small, dry towel with you while you’re at the gym! When sweat rolls down your forehead wipe it away instead of using the oils from your fingertips. Trust us, this works wonders and it won’t make you feel as sweaty as you actually are, which might even help you push yourself a little more!

Step 1: Hydrate

The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Lotion | Clean & Clear Oil-Free Dual Action Moisturizer | Pond’s Nourishing Moisturizing Cream

PRO TIP: Your body loses water as you sweat, so it’s important to keep hydrated!

Step 2: Use tinted sunscreen

Tinted Sunscreen

Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF | La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Body Mineral Tinted Sunscreen | Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturizer

Exercising outside? Lather up your skin protection! Rae says tinted sunscreen like these are really good at multitasking: they protect your skin from harmful UV rays, offer coverage if you have any imperfections, and help moisturize your skin.

Step 3: Oil-free, lightweight foundation

Oil-free, lightweight foundation

Neutrogena Skin Clearing Oil-Free Liquid Makeup | Clinique Stay Matte Oil Free Foundation | Too Faced Born This Way Oil-Free Foundation

We know, sometimes you need full coverage foundations, but trust us, workout time is a good chance to skip your heavier foundations. According to Rae, "makeup worn during exercise should be oil-free so that your skin can breathe."

Step 4: Water-proof mascara

Waterproof Mascara

CoverGirl Professional Waterproof Mascara | Maybelline Lash Discovery Waterproof Mascara | Black Radiance Waterproof Mascara

It may seem obvious, but sometimes we forget that if you're wearing mascara to the gym it HAS to be waterproof. We all know how hard it is to pull off the raccoon eyes look...

Step 5: Set your makeup

Setting Sprays

Skindinavia The Makeup Primer Spray - Oil Control | Urban Decay De-Slick Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray

Setting sprays keep your oil-free makeup in place while you get fit and help you cool off after you exercise, which sounds like a win-win to us! Who doesn't love multi-tasking beauty?!

Step 6: Wipe your face with a towelette

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes | Pond’s Wet Cleansing Towelette

When you’re finished with your workout, it’s best to wipe your face clean to be sure that dirt and oil don’t settle into your pores.
