I've been curious with magnetic masks for a while. There are a number pricey options out there, so when e.l.f. dropped an option for under $25 (as part of their brand new Beauty Shield line!), I knew I had to snatch it up. After getting a first-hand lesson on how to work this kit's magnetic magic from Achelle Richards, Chief Global Artistic Director at e.l.f. cosmetics, I felt pretty confident I could master this mask at home.
The product: e.l.f. Beauty Shield™ Magnetic Mask Kit ($24)
What it is: A three-piece antioxidant-rich facial mask kit designed to remove impurities, minimize pores, and leave skin glowing. The kit includes a jar of the iron-based face mask, which is chock full of antioxidants found in Carrot Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Argan Oil. These ingredients power together to deliver a nourishing shield (hence the Beauty Shield name) to protect skin again environmental aggressors like pollution and free radicals—you know, the usual suspects.
The kit also includes a magnet and spoon duo wand and 20 plastic covers to place over the magnet head to make it a mess-free experience.
First thing's first: application is super simple. Now I'll admit, I'm a messy girl, so I got a little mask happy and ended up rubbing the formula all over my face with my hands instead of the spoon, but if a little mess isn't your style, the spoon has you covered.
The mask itself has the strangest consistency I've ever felt. And I mean this in the best way possible. Unlike many clay masks or thick moisture masks, which go on gloppy and then harden and tighten, e.l.f.'s Magnetic Mask was creamy and actually had more of a mattifying, powder-like feel to it. (In fact, I kinda loved the powder feel, so if e.l.f. wants to turn this into a moisturizer, I'm here for it!) Although it was relatively easy to spread, I was worried I wasn't applying enough so I think I might have overdone it and laid it on pretty thick—hey, live and learn.
After smearing the gray delicious-smelling concoction on my face (Achelle told me all products in e.l.f.'s Beauty Shield line smell this citrus-y and yummy!), I waited about five to seven minutes. Here's where the mask really won me over: I could actually do things while the mask was on my face. I didn't have to sit there in discomfort while it dried and cracked or peel—my biggest pet peeve with face masks. It just laid on top of my skin and did work!
Next, I took the magnetic wand with the plastic cover on and swiped it over my face to see the magic in action. The wand literally lifted the mask right off. (I might have uttered "wingardium leviosa" once or twice, OK?) It was probably the most unique masking experience I've had to date. The feeling was somewhere in between a tickle and a massage. And it was so easy to use—the gray mask piled up on the plastic wand and wasn't messy in the slightest. (Tip: Achelle told me you can wipe the mask right off the plastic cover and reuse to conserve your sleeves!) The only difficulty I had was getting some of the product lifted off around the deep corners my nose, but ultimately it was a breeze.
Post masking, my skin was almost entirely free of product. I massaged in the remaining product and voilà! That's it. No need for rinsing skin post masking as it's really designed to create a barrier of protection. Although I used this at night for some "skin-tertainment" (Thanks for the fun term, Achelle!), I'm dying to use this in the AM before putting on my makeup, as it really left my skin smooth and radiant, not to mention shine free.
Will I be masking again? Count on it.
