We Tried It: Paint-On False Lashes

There are some products you can wear everyday. False lashes are not one of them. (OK, you could but who has time for all that glue?) Although we love the look of falsies, we don't always have the patience for them. In our attempts at trying every alternative around, we stumbled upon this top-selling mascara. Get the scoop on our adventure with paint-on lashes.

The productd.j.v. MIARAY Volume Lash ($19)

What it is: You might have heard of Japan's best-selling mascara d.j.v. MIARAY Fiberwig mascara. Well, this is its newer cousin. Created with the same paint-on lash technology, the Volume Lash mascara boasts a unique "film" that coats lashes to add a false-lash effect while separating and adding volume.

Our take: OK, so it looks like normal mascara, and in a way, it kinda is. But the technology behind this product is what sold me. The "film" that coats the lashes claims to be flake-proof, smudge-proof, and won't fall out causing dreaded "Panda eyes." With that in mind, I gave it a go.

To use, apply the mascara as you would any other mascara. Curl lashes before (honestly, I didn't—again, who has time for that?) and follow with a swipe of the product. On first application, I saw the lashes plump up. Naturally, I couldn't stop with just one swipe. Four or five (or seven or eight) swipes later and my lashes were fully coated with the "film."

Bottom line: Overall, it was much more subtle than I had expected. I've tried other fiber mascaras. With other paint-on fiber mascaras, there are tubes or little flecks of product that build to create the false look. With these, it's more delicate. The film is definitely present, and as you apply, you notice it more.

For me, length wasn't what I noticed. It was the fullness. Just as you get a sense of depth with false lashes, this tube of paint-on lashes gave me the fluffiness I crave. After a full day of wearing it (and a holiday party later!), there was zero fallout, no creasing, and the lashes stayed curled and lush. Although I wouldn't say this mascara is a dead-ringer for false lashes, but for anyone who wants a lovely lash look without the work of falsies, this is top notch.
