Moisturizing is always a key part of daily skincare, but it’s mandatory during the frigid days of winter. Blustery winds, sub-zero temps, and moisture-sucking indoor heating make it essential that you keep up with your moisturizing game. While there are tons of super hydrating beauty products to choose from, a DIY approach can be just as nourishing. If you’re looking to make your own moisturizer, we’ve rounded up some simple recipes to help you soothe scaly skin. Try whipping up one on your next snow day.

Coconut Oil + Olive Oil

What you’ll need:

2 Tbsp coconut oil

1/3 cup olive oil

Directions:

Melt the coconut oil until it becomes a liquid then incorporate the olive oil. Pour into a jar. Once it has firmed up, slather it over your entire body.

Why it works:

Coconut oil and olive oil are both very hydrating on their own. When you combine them, you get twice the goodness and a product with a gorgeous consistency.

Coconut Oil + Honey

What you’ll need:

2 tsp coconut oil

1 ½ tsp honey

Directions:

Measure out the ingredients into a bowl and mix them until they’re well combined. Then, apply them to any dry spots as a moisturizer or even as a mask.

Why it works:

We know that coconut oil is a mega moisturizer, but so is honey. Plus, it’s antimicrobial making it ideal for skincare.

Shea Butter + Coconut Oil

What you’ll need:

1 cup shea butter

1 cup coconut oil

1/3 cup arrowroot powder (optional)

Directions:

Soften the shea butter slowly in the microwave. Then, combine all of the ingredients into a bowl. Once they’re properly mixed, transfer them to a jar. Then you can start moisturizing.

Why it works:

Shea butter is a hero ingredient in many of our favorite store-bought lotions. Combine it with nourishing coconut oil and you have yourself a winning combination that will stop flaky skin. The optional arrowroot powder gives the formula a less greasy texture.

Coconut Oil + Olive Oil + Shea Butter + Cocoa Butter

What you’ll need:

½ cup coconut oil

½ cup olive oil

½ cup shea butter

½ cup cocoa butter

1 tsp essential oil (optional)

Directions:

Soften the coconut oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter on the stove using low heat until they become liquid. Add in the olive oil and mix everything together until they’re well combined. Remove the mixture from the heat and add the essential oil, if you’re using it.

Why it works:

One oil or butter would pack a good moisture hit on its own, but when you combine four of them into your recipe, you’re getting four times the goodness. Dry skin, what dry skin?

Avocado Oil + Olive Oil + Shea Butter

What you’ll need:

½ cup avocado oil

¼ cup olive oil

2 tbsp shea butter

3 tbsp beeswax pellets

Directions:

Put the beeswax pellets in a pan over low heat until they’re melted then add in the shea butter followed by the olive oil and avocado oil. Combine everything together then transfer the mix to a jar.

Why it works:

Avocado oil, olive oil, and shea butter are all recognized for their hydrating properties. The beeswax gives the lotion a slightly thicker consistency, but you’ll still be able to spread it on your body easily.
