We Tried It: Charcoal Toothpaste
I'm no newbie when it comes to charcoal. I know the ins and outs of the benefits of activated charcoal when it comes to your skin-it's a highly effective filter a.k.a. giant magnet that's able to draw out pollutants and impurities (i.e. goodbye blackheads). But I must admit, when Curaprox's new White is Black Tough Whitening Toothpaste hit my desk, I did a double take.
Product: Curaprox White is Black Tough Whitening Toothpaste ($29.99)
What it is: It looks like your normal, everyday toothpaste, except it's totally not. The Swiss-based oral care company launched this 100 percent natural activated charcoal toothpaste to whiten and brighten teeth. Similar to its skincare counter parts, the charcoal in Curaprox acts like a giant magnet to pull off stains and balance the PH of the mouth while protecting against the growth of pathogens and cavities. The formula is all-natural and contains a very low number of abrasive particles, no bleaching agents, no plastic particles, and no triclosan or SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate). But of course, charcoal is the star here.
Our take: I was extremely excited to get my hands on this product—if only for the Snapchat opportunity. I have the White is Black flavor, a refreshing mint, but there's also Black is White, a zesty lime. The paste did not disappoint in any aspect. It was completely black and made my mouth look like I was nomming on dirt. (The Snapchat was so worth it.) The flavor was quite refreshing and honestly, had it not been for the color, I wouldn't have known it wasn't my typical toothpaste. Now for the whitening part. This is always tricky for me to judge my own teeth because after all, we're our own worst critics, but after a few uses I did notice what I believe to be a touch of a whiter smile!
Bottom line: Overall, I am so happy I've added this product to my routine. It's quirky and photogenic, clearly a must for any beauty gal. But it's also a quality find. The flavor is tasty and the formula is strong—my teeth feel squeaky clean after each use. And I'll be honest, I thoroughly enjoy seeing my teeth go from drenched in black toothpaste to sparkling white in the matter of two minutes.
