In this edition of our series, Behind the Brand, we're spotlighting Sarah Brooks, the super fit pilates guru behind Sarah Brooks Pilates. Brooks got her start as a personal trainer but uncovered a genuine passion for the world of Pilates along the way. With a certification from Pilates Sports Center, Sarah uses her in-depth knowledge and encouraging instruction to help transform her clients’ bodies (and even better—their attitudes)!
We asked Brooks about her achievements, her company, and her favorite Pilates moves! Read on to hear what she had to say:
Any words of advice for women who want to work in the fitness industry?
"Be yourself and find your own identity. No matter which specific field in this industry those who have succeeded had something unique to bring to the table. Let your personality shine through in the way that you teach and people will love you! Take a little bit of everyone’s ideas and methods and come up with your own conclusion."
How did you land your first job in the industry?
"I always knew that fitness was my passion, I just never knew it was Pilates that would make me complete. I was working at Gold’s Gym in Miami and I met a wonderful teacher who introduced me to Pilates. She was beautiful inside and out, and she really made me love Pilates and never want to go back to Personal Training. She ultimately got me my first Pilates job at Equinox in South Beach."
How do you handle setbacks - whether it is a missed opportunity, something not turning out your way?
"Oh, set-backs, do I adore you! These obstacles are how you become who you are. I honestly believe if I didn’t go through the many set-backs in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be the person and teacher that I am. You have to keep your head high and your goals priority. Everything will work out in time and in patience."
Is your career what you expected it to be? (What you saw yourself doing in your early years?)
"I started as a personal trainer and I knew at a young age this was my career. The way I was led to Pilates came so organically and it is everything I expected it to be. In the fitness industry, it is your passion that will lead to the success of your clients. Their success is my happiness."
What is your favorite part about your job?
"I feel so lucky and grateful that my job is not a job and it is what I love to teach everyday. My favorite part is seeing my clients happy, healthy, and more importantly pain-free."
What was the biggest win or accomplishment you've had in your career? Anything you're most proud of?
"I work a lot with Pre- and Post-Natal women. It is such a joy to work with them throughout their pregnancy and then, of course, getting them back into shape after! A really proud moment was with my first client whom I had worked with during her entire pregnancy—holding her daughter when she was born. I felt so happy and proud of how good she felt as a new mom, confident in her body. Her healthy and quick recovery was such a monumental moment me. I had a part in helping her achieve her goal."
Favorite Pilates move?
"I love a feet in straps series! There are so many different movements but it engages your core like crazy and of course creates those long, lean, legs we love! I am also crazy about the mat repertoire. It really gets you the tight abs you want. The roll up, roll over, and The Hundred is a great place to start. Best part you can practice this anywhere!"
