Some families pass down jewels while others pass down heirlooms of a different kind. For twin sisters Jane and Jedi Nyachiro the “heirloom” their family passed down was a hair formula. The tried-and-true formula turns flyaway curls into silky, nourished ones. It is so good that it became the basis for the sister’s haircare line Jirano. We spoke with the two sisters to find out more about the brand and the family recipe.
How did the idea for Jirano come about?
“Hair rituals have been an integral part of our family and they span many generations from our mother, grandmother, and beyond. My twin sister Jedi and I wanted to use the same key ingredients to create a family of products. We went back in time to a traditional family recipe that was perfected over generations, using natural ingredients to provide hair with the essential elements it needs to smooth, grow and flourish.”
Tell us about the family connection to the brand.
“We remember going to the big open market on Sundays where we would buy all kinds of fruits including coconuts from the coast, avocados, the ripest Shea nuts, exotic oils, and spices. My mom would crush the ingredients by hand and make products to put into our hair. As we grew, we watched in fascination as natural ingredients turned into magical creams that cleansed and nourished our hair. We’ve incorporated these key ingredients from generations of hair care like coconut milk, avocado and Shea in our formulations.”
How important is it for you to use natural ingredients?
“Finding natural ingredients is very important in our formulations. Many products are made with synthetic ingredients including known toxins that end up in the bloodstream via skin absorption or hair follicles. I really do believe there are natural alternatives that produce fantastic results.”
What's your typical day like?
“First thing I do is make sure all orders are taken care of. Then I look over customer inquiries and any other inquiries about our products. After that, I will hop on to social media and interact with comments and messages. In my downtime, I catch up to industry news and trends. Somewhere in there I will do a morning or mid-day workout.”
What is the biggest piece of advice you've learned from running Jirano?
“Patience. Patience. A lot of things take time in this industry. I’m also learning to be open to changes – your product branding, formulation, and name may change during the process. When changes happen, you can’t freeze in paralysis—you’ve got to be able to adapt quickly and keep it moving.”
What advice would you give to your younger selves?
“I would say to just do it. Be in the moment. Stop worrying and just do it.”
What are your favorite products in the range?
“All products in the range detangle, smooth, and moisturize my hair. They are created as a system, but I must say that the Jirano Coconut Leave in Conditioner is my go-to daily product. I add a few pumps of it to a spray bottle and use it throughout the week.”
What has been your proudest moment with the brand so far?
“Each time I open an email and read about a customer who loved the product and what it did to their hair…that makes my day.“
What's next for the brand?
“We started with 4 staple products and now we’re excited to start adding styling products along with treatments to our brand.”
