Behind the Brand: 17-Year Old Founder of Hipstapatch
Want to know what it takes to start a super successful company before you turn 18?! Meet 17-year old entrepreneur Amanda Glass, current high school student and founder of Hipstapatch! This girl has managed to create an uber-successful company all the while maintaining a social life and applying to college, want to know her secrets? Read on below!
What inspired you to start your company?
I have always been really inspired by the 90s fad of patches and denim, so my goal was to bring it back with a twist. My inspiration for the different patch designs comes from all over, but mostly social media - Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest are my go-to apps when in need of some design inspo. I also love looking through magazines like Teen Vogue, Seventeen, and Nylon!
Do you think your age affects your company? How so?
Being 17 definitely has its pros and cons. This past year I’ve been super preoccupied with school and getting ready for college, so it wasn’t too easy to find time for Hipstapatch. Now that senior year is coming to an end, I’m excited to spend the summer building the company! For the most part, I think people are intrigued when they hear a business was started by a teenager. It’s something I’m extremely proud of, as there aren’t too many teenage entrepreneurs out there. I can only hope that running a business at 17 has inspired other girls and guys my age to pursue what they love.
What is your favorite part about what you're doing?
I love nothing more than seeing people with their patches. Seriously, it makes my day. My friends send me pictures all the time of strangers with patches on their phone cases or backpacks, and each time I get just as excited as I was the time before. It’s also super rewarding to walk into stores that sell Hipstapatch. Most of the time I just check them out and act like a regular customer (while trying to hold back my huge grin).
What is a piece of advice you'd give to a young entrepreneur?
Never give up. Ever! When I first thought of the idea for Hipstapatch, it seemed almost impossible, especially at my age. I was so fortunate to have extremely supportive family members who helped me turn my dream into a reality. No matter where you go or what you do, you’re always going to have people who doubt you. It’s your job to prove them wrong!
What's your favorite Hipstapatch product of all time?
Definitely the Hot Lips patch. If I could stick it on every item I own, I would.
