Beauty 101: Ampoules

It's like your favorite serum, only better.

ByCaitlin M.

Leave it to Korean beauty to bring us a whole slew of lingo to learn and steps to add to our beauty routine. Although we could fill up an entire dictionary with the different terms, products, and practices to try, this week we're focusing on one in particular: ampoules.

The scoop: Ampoules aren't quite as well known as other K-beauty products such as essences or sleeping packs, but they're just as important! Pronounced amp-yool, this skincare product is basically the extreme version of serum.

Why they're necessary: Found in pure liquid form or sometimes in tiny capsules, ampoules contain a very potent, high concentration of active ingredients, so similar to a serum, they're meant for treating a specific skin concern. Their high ingredient concentration and deep absorption make them a go-to for many wishing to target anti-aging signs.

How to use them: Because ampoules are very similar to essences, serums, and the like, you can really easily work them into your skincare routine. They typically have a watery finish, so following the rule of thumb of applying your lightest products first followed by your heavier ones, you can follow your cleanser and toner with an ampoule and then apply your essence or serum. Because they're so powerful (and typically on the pricier side!), you don't necessarily need to use an ampoule every night, so utilizing them as a supplement a few times a week is wise.
