Skincare. We love it, we need it. We can't get enough of it, especially in 2020. As we have spent more time at home, and less time applying makeup, skincare has taken over hearts and vanities. So we figured who better to go to for some at-home tips than Celebrity Facialist, Founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skin Care and Author of “Glow From Within," Joanna Vargas.

You’ve been called the Queen of Inclusivity, that’s an impressive title, how did you inspire this namesake and how do you uphold it?

That is really kind! As I was coming up in the industry, I felt that I wanted to see workplaces reflect the world that I lived in. All we did was hire the most qualified men and women as we grew. I am very proud of the diversity of my company. My husband and I have always made a point to grow our company from within the organization, so people who were hired as reception years ago are now a part of our executive team. As Latinos, we have always felt that education and opportunity are the keys to the success of the individual. For us, it’s a company mantra.

Who has inspired you throughout your career?

I have always said my love of the beauty industry came from my grandmother. She was the most glamorous and always smelled amazing. She would have loved what my brand has become, and I always think of her when I take on a new project. Self-care and ritualizing a routine is something I preach to all my clients and those concepts were born from watching my grandmother doing her routine.

With people spending more time at home, and on skin care in general, how can they step up their daily regimen?

I highly recommend dry brushing for full body exfoliation. Dry brushing increases blood flow, which is healthy, but its main purpose is to stimulate collagen production which will help to thicken the skin and lessen the appearance of fat cells. It also dramatically increases elasticity, so it's great for lifting and toning a problem area. Start at the tops of the feet and brush upwards towards the heart. Spend extra time on areas that tend to be more stagnant, like the inner thigh, and don't forget to include the backs of the arms and the back. I personally use my Ritual Brush, but really any Dry Brush should work.

Exfoliation usually acts as a mini facial and it will bring our glow back immediately. I encourage my clients to sleep in my Exfoliating Mask. It evens out pigment, takes down inflammation and after a good night’s sleep in it, you wake up fresh faced like you have just had a facial!

I also have a ton of great DIY recipes in my new book Glow From Within that you can easily make from ingredients in the pantry. One of my favorite at-home recipes for dry skin is my Hydrating Mask. The yogurt is this mask is an anti-inflammatory with a lactic acid component. Avocado is something I recommend for any skin type – avocado has lots of B vitamins and fatty acids, so it’s essential to keep the skin hydrated, even in dry winter weather. The honey also hydrates, and will really transform the skin!

1/2 cup yogurt

1/2 avocado

1/4 honey

Leave on the skin for 20 minutes, then rinse.

What’s an essential skin care product you just can’t live without?

The Rejuvenating Serum combines my favorite oils to create a perfect blend of soothing, hydrating oils to make you look glow all day. I love the smell! It reminds me of the honeysuckle bushes that were across the street from my house growing up. I couldn’t live without it!

Can you talk to me a bit about your magic glow wand? Why and how is it effective?

My new skincare device, Magic Glow Wand, is great for at-home and on-the-go facial tool. It will help boost your glow, make the most out of a mask and feels great on the skin! To use it, I would use the hot settings for exfoliation and the cold settings for calming and contouring over a sheet mask or your favorite serum. I talk a lot about face massage being great and healthy for skin. Now you can really have a great facial right in your bathroom and from the comfort of your own home.

Which would you say is the most popular face mask you offer, and which is your personal favorite of the line?

I'm a big fan of multitasking with my products, so I use my own Exfoliating Mask. It contains clay to help physically cleanse the skin and it also contains galactoarabinan, naturally derived from the larch tree. It causes amazing cell turnover and lightens my sunspots while serving as an anti-inflammatory, so it’s an exfoliating, anti-aging beauty mask. After a good night’s sleep in the mask, you wake up fresh faced like you have just had a facial!

I’m also obsessed with sheet masks. I love the ease with high someone can work them into their routine and that they can be used prescriptively. You can see what your skin needs in the moment and choose the mask that fits that. A good place to start would be a mask that contains hyaluronic acid and peptides, so you feel like you look glow and hydrated after. My sheet masks are loaded with great serum and I feel like it's enough to treat the whole face neck and chest. You should feel like you can see a difference immediately. My Glow to Go Mask Set is great because you can choose the sheet you need in the moment to address specific skin concerns.
