After what’s felt like the longest year ever, many of us came into 2021 on the prowl for a new beginning—and what better way to start fresh than with a fresh cut?! This year’s hottest haircut trends will be a reflection of one major lifestyle change we all have in common: we’re home all the damn time. Due to a raging pandemic that has limited people’s ability to visit hair salons, and with many still working remote, we can expect to see haircuts that take minimal upkeep, according to celebrity hairstylist Ryan Richman. Through his work with clients like Sarah Hyland and Madelaine Petsch, Ryan has seen it all and is here to spill the tea. From bobs and lobs to mullets (yup, mullets), these are his 2021 haircut trend predictions.

Bob / Lobs

Bobs are classic and were popular in 2020. We will continue to see the bob in various lengths, from chin length to shoulder length. The difference will be more of a care free natural style. Try using Monat Studio One™ Blow Dry Cream on towel dried hair to restore softness and shine while protecting against heat. Rough dry your hair and smooth with a medium sized round brush to smooth. Use your round brush to add bend to the ends or hold it vertically and roll the hair back away from the face as you dry to create a natural soft wave.

Remove weight by adding a lot of layers to your cut. The shag gives you tons of movement and volume at the crown with airy texture around the edges. A great style for rocking your natural texture from straight, to wavy or curly.  Use a mousse like Monat’s Studio One™ The Moxie Magnifying Mousse, for volume, hold and a frizz-free finish in one.  Apply to towel dried hair and scrunch to bring out your natural texture. Use a diffuser to dry. For straighter hair, apply Moxie Mousse and rough dry upside down. Use a flat iron or curling iron to add bend in different directions.

The Pixie is cool, sexy, and easy to style at home. Ditch the hair repair products, split end creams, and deep conditioners, and visit the salon less frequently.  Style with Monat Restyle Instant Sculpting Taffy, a pliable sculpting base, for definition and texture. Apply to towel dried hair and blow dry in all directions using your fingers to lift and move the hair the create texture. For fine to medium texture, finish with Monat Studio One™ Dry Texturizing Spray for tousled effortless texture.

Curtain Bangs / Side Swept Bangs

Curtain bangs and longer side swept bangs are softer and easier to style than short blunt bangs.  They give you shape and texture around the face.  Best of all they’re noncommittal!  As they grow out they will start to blend into the longer lengths of your hair while still giving you face framing.  Long bangs are also easy to learn how to trim at home.  Shaggy 70s bangs are also a great way for people with curly hair to add some playfulness to their style.  To style, prep towel dried hair with Monat Studio One™ The Moxie Magnifying Mousse, focusing at the root, for buildable volume and hold.  Use a medium sized round brush and dry your bangs first.  A round brush will give your bangs a nice soft curve with volume.

Miley Cyrus has been at the forefront of the modern mullet and Ryan's all about it and has even been growing his own hair into the trendy style. Miley’s mullet is a combination of all current hair trends, part lob, shaggy bangs, and short layers around the face. This haircut is edgy and very easy to style. Monat Studio One™ Air Dry Cream is a simple, one step styling product that and shine and frizz-free texture.  Apply to towel dried hair comb through to distribute the product and to lay the hair the way you want it to dry.  If you have a cowlick in your bangs use a blow dryer and a brush to dry the bangs by moving them left and right as you dry to break the cowlick. Allow the rest of your hair to dry naturally. Alas, a haircut for men and women!
