The YMCA that I went to that was close to my old house was about medium sized and not as big or nice as some gyms were though the cost was similar, the family membership is the reason we went there and I did like the friendliness of the staff and there were always clean towels out to use and the hot tub was nice and the showers were nice also. It had a pool with a lifeguard that was also very nice and you could pay $2 per visit or you could pay for a membership.
It’s always loud here, but it’s also a great place to meet up and train with other people. The pool is colder than other gyms and not open for lap swimming as often as I would like because of kids swim classes, but that is a valid reason as kids need to learn to swim. I come here when I am meeting up with friends who have kids or if I have a large group of people who want to all work out together. I just get a day pass, as this isn’t my scene for a peaceful high energy gym, but I know the classes here are at a good price and I may look into one or two of them.
I’ve been going to the Y for about 6 months now and I love it! It’s great for our family of 5 because we can take our kids with us and drop them off at kids watch while my husband and I get a good workout in. The employees that are there watching our kids are phenomenal! They really do a great job with the Little’s at all ages. We have a 9 month old, 3 yr old, and 7 yr old and they all really enjoy their classes and teachers. The fitness classes they offer are great as well! The entire vibe of the gym itself is great and the people that go there are so nice!
I love the time I spent at the YMCA gym. I loved the child-watch feature for my kids, although I wish childwatch was more stimulating for my 5 year old. My 3 year old loved childwatch. My favorite feature was the group fitness classes. I am not really experienced on fitness machines so I actually never set foot in the exercise rooms. I wish they automatically gave you a quick Your when you visit the first time. Complementary coffee was appreciated. The sauna was awesome. The locker rooms and showers were very well maintained.
I've been to the YMCA near my home and enjoyed what it had to offer. The variety of equipment, open pool hours, flexible fitness classes, and services are exceptional. There is even a rock climbing wall! My only qualm is that they raised their membership fee again and it's now $40. It doesn't seem like a lot but when you don't qualify for a reduced fee and you are on a fixed income, it just isn't practical. However for the amount of things they have to offer this price seems reasonable for most people.
I used to work for the Y in child care and loved being able to use YMCA gyms to work out. They are always clean and have an abundant amount of staff available to help on the floor. One feature that I think is way underused is the personal coaching that the Y offers for free. I was recovering from spinal surgery and was able to talk to a coach to set up a good recovery workout plan. They also helped with my diet. Great service for all members!
Ok the YMCA is very family friendly and they have a daycare plus activities for the kids but the gym was very small and claustrophobic to me. The pros are the many other activities they have like basketball court and the pool and group fitness class. Cons - small workout space at my local YMCA
The YMCA gym is the best value for your money in my opinion. Yes, it does cost slightly more than other gym options but in exchange comes with so many amenities that it's completely worth the extra cost. My local Y has a wonderful gym setup with wide variety of machines to use. Once you're done can go relax in the sauna, steam room, and/or hot tub to relax your muscles and increase your bounce back rate from the gym. Added bonus they have child care (for a limited periods of time).
I started going to the ymca about 3 months ago and I can never go back to another gym. The staff are so incredibly friendly, the gym is always clean, plenty of machines for everyone, and even the other people there working out are helpful. The childcare they also provide is phenomenal and I love the open gym they have as well - nothing like going to the gym and getting the chance to join in on your favorite sport!
The one in Austin, TX by the lake is the best! I use the elliptical on the main floor and there’s always one available and it’s clean. I’ve also used the weights in the basement and it’s not a negative experience like other gyms. My favorite are the yoga classes offered upstairs everyday! Great teachers. Rest of staff is very nice. Also, good locker rooms and a pool. Close to running path and Barton Springs.

Does anyone else think they're a little bit pricey?
Do you think the higher membership price (as compared to other local gyms) is worth it for the "perks" you get at the Y, such as kid/family events and childcare?
